Finally got a SB Touch and it was the easiest piece to setup, took maybe 5 minutes..need some tips.
I'm finally hearing my hi-rez files in hirez right or are there software switches to throw first? I know somewhere there is a tip thread-anybody got it??
Whats the number one tweak I should do beside a new PSU?? Thanks!!!! :stupid:

Congratulations on the new purchase.

Make sure you update your SqueezeServer software and the firmware in the Touch.

Some people find that there could be drops streaming 24/96 wirelessly. You might want to consider running an Ethernet cable from your router to the Touch. Ethernet from your PS to the Router is also a good thing.

You might want to take a look at Soundcheck's Touch Toolbox for software mods that many feel improve the sound of the Touch.

As mentioned, the switching power supply can be changed for a linear PS. I have recently revised the digital hardware mods for the Touch. Drop me a PM and we can discuss those.

Darn, AB beat me to it

Ed,

Glad to hear the good news about the Touch.
Lots of support on this Circle.

I'm getting ready to order one from Crutchfield, and I am planning to use the wireless connection from my router (Touch will be about twenty feet away) because my DAC and audio system is across the room and I can't string a cable to it.

I hope I don't have problems with this type of connection. I do have a new, very strong wireless router.

Enjoy,

James

Wayne,

I looked at your site, and I will be contacting you about one of the power supplies for the Touch.

I have seen most wireless connection problems when going through walls, (particularly through multiple walls), and it is also greatly influenced by the type of wall construction.  I have plaster walls with a wire mesh underlayment and I had problems wirelessly streaming 1080i video to an Xbox Media Center Extender through several of these walls and was forced to run an Ethernet cable.

Streaming audio across even a very large room without walls in between is generally a piece of cake for most any setup.

One thing is for sure, I gotta get a linear PS or have Wayne mod my existing PE one because the soundstage is like narrow and crappy with this wall wart (I hope thats why and its not the Touch itself because right now it sounds just OK) in the meantime I'm looking up that webpage as soon as I post this message.
My 24/96 stuff has a lot more depth, drums in particular sound excellent-and I love that!!!!!!!

I purchased a Touch when they first came out and didn't think anything of it, and sent it back.  I recently was comparing multiple sources (long story) and I ended up buying another Touch.  You are so right about the sound stage.

The first thing I did was the Soundcheck mods and they do seem to clean up the sound.  The sound stage was still very collapsed when using the analog outs compared to my DAC.  I saw some comments from Wayne about the Jerome linear PS and purchased one.  When I fired up the Touch using its analog outs with the Jerome PS, I was shocked!  The increased clarity was greatly improved, but the sound stage is what really shocked me.  It went from inside of my speakers to a few feet to the outside of them.  I'd say the Touch is now almost as good as my DAC!

I always thought people saying the Touch was so great were really full of it.  Well, I'm sitting here right now really liking the sound.  I guess I'm eating a little crow on this one.  Those people were right, the Touch can be pretty darn great.

When I got my DUET, I got a PM from some guy Wayne and he told me to get the PE power supply and that was it, I did, I was floored by the difference and what Wayne suggests I try my best to do..he's a wizard with stuff as far as I'm concerned. :thumb:

Steve,

When I moved into this house, I networked each room with CAT5E doing wall fiches thru the attic. Of course you can never plan ahead enough, and I didn't consider needing a network outlet by my 2 channel system.

But then I got the Vision DAC and knew I had to utilize all of my digital audio, so here we go.

And I agree about wireless signals and open space, I do stream video from a wireless BDP
without a hiccup. I should be OK. But if not, I'll be in the attic when it gets cooler.

Thanks,

James

I never used the Touch without an upgraded power supply.  I also never used it without my BDA-1 DAC.  I am really amazed (I grabbed one with a 40% off coupon from Logitech that lasted for just hours and was posted on Audio Circle) at how good it sounds for the cost.  It even sounds good on internet radio (I listen to 320bps Linn Jazz most of the time) and the soundstage at its price point.  If I saw one at the deal I got it for, I'd probably buy at least one more (I might buy one for the secondary bedroom system and one for the secondary basement system).

Well I got lucky and last week got an email coupon from Logitech about a week long sale where I could use the 50% coupon for one item so I got the touch for $149.99 shipped....my duet only cost me $100 on ebay way back so my total Squeezebox cash spent to date for two units is $249.99...not bad for an old guy!!!  Like I said I got lucky. :thumb:

Aw Damn. What a deal for the Touch. Half price.

Good job Ed.

The other half for a PS from Wayne. And money for a killer dinner left over.

James

BTW, I've been thinking about you lately.
I've been hearing some tracks with some seriously good drums.

Well,
Right now I am listening to Jaimoe and Butch Trucks both banging up the joint at Fillmore East. With of course the rest of the Allman Bros.

Thanks for the reply 8)

Wayne hooked me up and sold me one he is going to mod for me....the Toolbox things I've done so far helped tremendously with that problem.......How are "The Boys" doing down there in Texas???
Thanks Nick...its a huge difference, I was so wrapped up in "it will ply my hi-rez files" that it wasn't until I set it up I realized how cool this gizmo is..very nice item!!! :thumb:

Whoever thinks this hi-rez thing is a passing phase or not worth the investment really should hear -Talking Heads- "Remain In Light" 24/96 that I got from HD Tracks on Friday-wow!!!! The music is so engaging and so crystal clear if your not a Talking Heads fan now you might be after you hear this....right now I have Headphones on and my tube integrated fairly well cranked up and this is pretty incredible sounding. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I was so wrapped up in just getting something that playback 24/96 natively that I totally forgot the coolness factor of the Touch. This is a really neat mini computer of sorts with a touch screen that just does what it does really well. Totally worth the investment at any price as far as I'm concerned. Very Nice, I only did the first couple tweaks that website describes and with virtually zero effort I got great sound happening now.
