Finally gone wireless!
« on: 18 Aug 2011, 07:02 pm »
Was having problems with old computer. For some reason it started running really slow, it was slow to begin with but not that slow. Wasn't able to fix the problem.

In addition to that the modem was constantly going offline. So out of frustration I started using my good computer online. But I still had the problem of modem crapping out.

Finally changed to new wires and went wireless and modem is stable and so far no problems. Connection is stable and fast although the reviews for my wireless router model are not good, supposedly craps out after 6 months.

But now I'm a happer camper. 8)

So what happens after 6 months?  :icon_lol: Fancy some exotic PCOCC silver plated net-phile grade cables?  :icon_lol:

I'm using buffalo wireless router, simple plug in and go action,NO buttons so it's totally me=fool proof.  :green: 5th year and still working like a charm.

Spoke too soon, modem just dropped connection twice.

Various reviewers claim after 6 months or so the router constantly losses connection. However there are other reviewers who claim no problems and it's a matter of proper installation of drivers and software. :smoke:

I used to have one of those crappy AOL branded modems back in the 56k age.  It overheats rapidly and constantly drops the connection.

With the addition of my new wireless router with 2 built in firewalls plus computer firewall. My computer is very secure, and fast, no waiting around for something to happen.

Did an online scan and my computer is practically invisible on the web. Not that I have anything important to protect other than not wanting some vandel hacker wrecking my good computer. :smoke:

Your modem which is frequently going off line, is it a POTS modem, a DSL modem, or a cable modem?

If the latter two, perhaps a call to your ISP would make sense.

It's a cable modem. The story as I recall goes like this...
When I had HD cable installed the technician installed new connections. Except that I still had an old long wire connected to modem as the splitter is quite a distance away. Everything worked fine for awhile then I began getting dropouts. I phoned the ISP and they did an online test and said everything was good that I had a bad connection. I didn't think there was anything wrong with connection so exchanged the modem for a new one. That didn't make a difference.

Then the modem was stable for long time until recently and was having frequent drop outs again. My firewall showed that I was getting frequent attacks so I thought that had something to do with it.

Anyway replaced the connections with new one, didn't make a difference. Since installing wireless router connection has been stable except for the disconnect two days ago. Downloaded the online service support from ISP and installed and connection has been good for two days without incident.

Notice two other wireless routers in range that are not always connected. So maybe that had something to do with sucking up bandwidth when they go online.

Other than that I don't know.
