Anyone use JJ 6550 tubes?
« on: 17 Aug 2011, 08:47 pm »
Anyone try these tubes?  I'm curious as I have read that they are better than the SED 6550 which I currently use.

It is an amp made by Melody  named Onix H6550. I can most likely also run KT88 which have lots of continders but I'm wondering what is out there in the 6550 family. New production NOS is big money. Wish they would make some Psvane 6550s. :)

Be aware the ratings for the KT88 are different than the 6550 so make certain your amp can take the KT88.  I did a quick search and found only one review, and no links to a manual, and there was no mention of using different tube types.

You might try the Svetlana 6550. Very nice tube with plenty of power.

Not just "no" to using JJ Octals, "N-O NO!" I had a pair of 6V6's that died a young death.  Their EL84 is one of the good tubes they make.

I'm not saying that this isn't 100% true...the JJ stuff does often have suspect durability and construction issues...but I had a quad of JJ KT77's a while back that was VERY nice.  I beat the crap out of them and they never blinked.  They were the best-sounding tubes I put in that old EL34 amp by far (even after I had tried Winged C's and EH 6CA7's).

So yes, you're kinda rolling the dice with JJ but they DO make good-sounding stuff if you get a good batch.
