Potting the Felix
« on: 11 Aug 2011, 12:39 am »
I'm thinking about making a Felix using copper THHN wire.  Can I pot the Felix?  Is it safe?  If so, can anyone recommend a potting compound?

TIA

Potting it should be fine. I use potting epoxy from AeroMarine Products

Thanks.  So does 2 qt kit make 1 gallon of compound?  Also, can you pour in stages?  Pour half then add a circuit and then add more compound on top of a fully cured previous pour?

No, 2qt's is the total amount. 1 quart resin, 1 quart hardener. With the potting compound you are not limited to thin layers, I pour about 1.5" deep in one shot. Not sure on doing multiple pours but it should be fine as with the other epoxies they sell there are explicit instructions to only pour layers with a maximum thickness of about 3/8". I checked with John Greer (the owner) and with the potting variety this is not a restriction.

Thanks.  What's the max thickness that I can pour with the 300/11?

The answer from them is:
You can pour the 300/11 up to a 1/2 inch thickness at a time. You can build up the thickness through repeat pours. The product is guaranteed for a year but it lasts for quite a long time.

Not the same answer they gave me. I've done over 150 boxes since I received this email and have not had any problems.

Good point- the exotherm of the potting epoxy is less so you should be able to pot 2".

    Hi John,

I recently purchased some of your epoxy potting compound and the guideline sheet that was included said not to pour more than 3/8" deep. I was wondering if this applies to the potting mixture as well as the more general purposed epoxies. I ask because some of the potting boxes I'm using are 2" deep and filling them 3/8" at a time is obviously pretty slow. :)

Interesting.  Maybe b/c you spoke with John and I spoke with Holly / Jennifer.   :dunno:  If you've done 2" deep with 300/11 then I should have no issues.
