Currently I use PurePlayer, Winamp and I-tunes in that order of prioity. To my ears, pureplayer sounds the best of the three. I've read many comments about how wasapi can improve the sound of playback. However, I looked into it and can't figure out how to implement it using pureplayer. I havent looked into how to use it with Winamp. Reading about wasapi and all of the commands and rendering a stream made my head hurt. At some point I will probably try J. River but in the mean time, can someone give me the simple version of how to "use" wasapi with pureplayer?

With PurePlayer you just check the checkbox WASAPI at the right bottom corner.

It will then use a different executable that will output to WASAPI and always on your default audio device. You can check/change this in Control Panel/Sound/Manage Audio devices

WASAPI is available on Vista and Windows 7

I should have mentioned that i did try selecting the Waspi button in pureplayer. I then hit play and the player displayed that it was processing and would do so for a long time (15-20 sec) and then skip to the next trac. This would continue until I hit stop - no music.

I didn't know about configuration through the control panel but when I looked, i saw no mention of waspi anywhere in the sound configuration.

I tried this while using my M-audio MobilePre as my external sound card. maybe there was some kind of confilict that I'm not aware of. Any further advice would be apprciated. Thanks, garth

The M-Audio website shows support for the following drivers:

Compatibility
ASIO 2
WDM
Mac OS X Core Audio

So I would say the device doesn't offer support for WASAPI, just ASIO and DirectSound on Windows.
I would contact M-Audio and ask if they can provide drivers for WASAPI on Windows 7.

Or else buy another soundcard. ESI Juli@ is a favourite of mine  in the low-budget category.

WASAPI bypasses the Windows mixer.
As a consequence the settings of the audio should match the settings of the soundcard exactly.
If you are playing 2 channel 16 bits 44.1 kHz audio, the soundcard must be set to this properties.
The moment you play eg. 24 bits it will be silence again until you manually match the properties.

As the card supports ASIO, this is probably a better driver in your case.
You might try the J River Media center, supports both ASIO and WASAPI.
You can configure the WASAPI settings to match you sound card.
In case of ASIO the sound card probably do automatic switching.

Thanks for your help Aleg! Just using the laptop and headphones pureplayer does work with wasapi. I should have tried this first but I generally only listen to music seriously with the Maudio soundcard. At least now I know, thanks again.

I love audiocircle, you guys are great. Vincent, I used your comments and set the playback rates to match my sound card rates and tada: my sound card, pureplayer and wasapi all working together to give me music. Thanks Vincent and Aleg.
