Can the 28BSST be too Powerful?
« on: 5 Aug 2011, 04:05 pm »
I have, and very much enjoy, a pair of 28BSSTs. They are currently driving a pair if Verity Audio Parsifal Ovations and have been for the past couple of years. The VAPO are now on the market ($12.5k on Audiogon if anyone is interested), and the speaker I am looking at to replace them with have a 4 Ohm load...

Considering the 1kw+ of the Bryston's with a 8 Ohm load, could they be too powerful for the 4 Ohm load? I am primarily concerned about damaging the speakers or amp...

Thanks for any input....jtb

Hi,

Not to worry - you can do much more damage under powering a speaker (clipping the waveform).

Not an issue. I have my 14B at 650 watts driving my 150 watt AZ's. Just listen for clipping and keep it below that volume.

So very true - I had an old Sony receiver that was famous for eating speakers. I guess that square waves and speakers are not compatible.

Be well...

For that 4 ohm load, the 28Bs are more than fine.

You can never have too much power...

My Proac's are 4 ohm speakers and they sound fantastic on the 28B-SST2 amps that I have.

My dealer reckons these amps are capable of 2400 wpc into a 4 ohm load, so that sounds just about right for my liking.   :D

They measure in at over 1800 wpc @ 4 ohms according to John Atkinson of Stereophile.

Curious.....Maybe someone knows what changes there have been in the 28B from when it was first introduced and now with today's version?

Changes have been the transformers used and the capacitors in the main circuit boards and input stage.

Thanks James

Just a couple more questions?
Is there a review out there that has been done since it was updated?
Do you remember the date they were first introduced?

Thanks
Brandon

I believe it was launched sometime in the later summer / early fall of 2006.

Would anyone have a link to said review after they were injected with the extra testosterone? ?

Hi James

Wondering if the new transformer and caps were in the 28's at the time of this review?
I get the impression that the amps were new to the reviewer at the time, correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct - Harry reviewed the newer versions later and gave us a Product of The Year Award.
