Different Strokes for Different Folks
« on: 2 Aug 2011, 01:37 am »
Evening all.  When looking at the "what are you listening to now" thread in the Bryston circle, I can't help but notice that the majority of music posted seems to lean in the hard rock and metal direction.

I'm wondering if it is just the frequent posters on this forum, or if Bryston gear is especially loved by rockers?

I've posted there from time to time and probably a minority of what I've posted would be considered rock or metal.  I'm listening to my office system (pic below) while I surf and I'm listening to Linn Internet Radio - Jazz.

I think the issue is there is a set forClassical, and another set of posts to say what one is listening to in Jazz. Also the vinyl listening set.
So with those out of the loop... I guess mostly Rock would appear here.
My listening is equally divided between Classical, Jazz, and Rock.
I tend to skip the Heavy Metal and go directly to Opera...
Right now in the changer Suzan Vega is currently playing,
Before her was PJ Harvey: Is This Desire
Before PJ was Manhattan Transfer: Swing
And prior to that was Tox Uthat (a trance compilation)
Before those were a pile of Bill Frisell...
(usually I listen to Classical in the Morning....)

I listen to more Jazz and Classical than I do Rock.

When I listen to Rock, it's typically mid-60's to late 70's Rock.  Pink Floyd and Queen are the 2 groups that I continued to purchase music from, no matter the years.

I like Bryston because it plays what's there.  It doesn't add anything and it doesn't hide anything.

The high Damping factor and the fast rise time are two features that I really like about my Bryston 4B-ST.

The best thing is that they're realistic.  Oboes sound like oboes. Bassoons sound like bassoons and those are 2 instruments that are very hard to reproduce.   On "Love Theme from Superman" on my Telarc "Time Warp" CD, you can distinctly hear the bells separate from the flutes, even though they're playing the same part.  I can also tell when the bell player is using a different set of mallets.  The Bryston provides that much detail.

I listen to lots. I have almost every kind of music in my CD cabinet.
Classic, soundtracks, pop, AOR, metal, jazz, new wave, name it, chances are I have it. My 14 year old spawn are probably the most well educated parasites when it comes to music in this neighborhood.

A Bryston amp does not discriminate, it simply amplifies whatever is fed into it. Which is why I own one.

I listen to hard rock and metal for fun, and most of the time I wanna have fun! However, my jazz, classical, and blues recordings are collecting dust, so it may be time to revisit those.

Hey VegasDave - if that dust continues to thicken...feel free to ship those jazz, classical and blues recordings my way... :icon_lol:

My audio gear mostly feasts on dark, delicious Gothic music.

Be well...

The fast rise times mean that musical attacks, whether they're a brass attack or drums, are there, at the right time.

On my Pictures at an Exhibition recording, near the end of the great gate of Kiev, one of the French is slightly behind the others on the screaming French Horn attack near the end.  With an amp with a slower rise time, those may all be smudged together.

Damping is how good an amplifier controls the speaker near the speaker cones resonant frequency. I think it also shows up in how bass and mid-bass are reproduced.  I think Bryston's reproduce bass and mid-bass, very well.

Thanks for the laugh.  I needed it this morning!

I do use Miss Clairol L'image 880 "soft black" hair dye, actually 2 boxes per sitting. I have an appointment with Lady Laundrew this weekend for a dye job as I am starting to notice a little more brown in my naturally, black-dyed hair  :o
