I remember many years ago I had assembled a really expensive tube system with the then most exotic and pricy speakers and components available and i went to a friends house and listened to his setup. It was a very modest system price wise and it floored me :duh:

At that point I sold my system and started over recognizing that the money spent does not always equate to performance gained.

Curious, how do you know they are happy?

Are you not happy?  I think most folks are happy.

I think this is up to what makes the person happy and can be fit in 3 categories.
1-The performance of the system.
2-The nice finish furniture.
3-A very high investment to impress friends.

How about me. :duh::Paid top money for silver gold in oil caps over $200 each. But when I got them the tolerance on the cap said 5% and I was reading 10% on all of them. The tolerance is more important then gold and silver.I would say it should be 1 or 2% with that kinds of price.

2. I realize people buy things for many more reasons than the task at hand - my famous saying around the factory is "people do not buy a Rolex to tell the time" :thumb:

I had a lot of fun today.I went to my friend's machine shop and this customer walked in and I just saw the Rolex on his hand and remember your saying.I told him,at least we know that we should not ask you the time.He asked me why?I told him the few people that I know, they do not buy a Rolex to tell the time.He said nothing and my friend ask me what side of bed did I woke up this morning then all 3 of us start,   But this is not done yet. When he was leaving we went out side with him and he was driving a Mercedes SL and I asked him how is warranty on his car and he told me I hope this one is not like The Rolex treat.

I have to write in defense of mechanical timepieces. My dad was a watchmaker for many years and I got drafted to wind all the watches daily. It was not at all unusual for a mechanical piece to test out at better than 30 seconds a month. In fact, old late 1800 Waltham railroad pocket watches could do this routinely.

Now, for GPS purposes that is not good enough, but for human time that is more than good enough. I certainly do not run my life on even the accuracy of a pocket watch, let alone some atomic clock. Another thing, I have watches in my possession that are still keeping good time that are over 50 years old. I have had NO quartz watch that has lived over two years.

To address the "accuracy" of inexpensive quartz watches I have to submit the observation that of the 8 electronic clocks in my house no two agree on the time. Once set they start to drift from each other in a few weeks. I brought up the observation to a jeweler friend of mine and he said "Yes, we notice that too. We reset them monthly." Sounds like the average electronic timepiece is about as accurate as the mechanical ones to me.

This is not to excuse the obscene prices that some watches are going for nowadays; the pricing is just insane to me. Then again...so is the high end of audio.
