Headphone preamp question
« on: 29 Jul 2011, 11:39 am »
I have the Schiit Valhalla tube amp.  My headphone is the Beyerdynamic DT 990 600 ohm. I have the amp connected to the tape out section on the AVR.  My question is this: Volume.  I have the volume to its max but this volume does not seem to be loud enough.  It should be blowing my ears off.  Would a headphone preamp be in order?

Might want to check the output voltage of the tape out of your AVR... it may not be rated at a full 2V which is limiting how much volume you can get. I know I've had a similar difficulty using my Audio Refinement Pre2DSP tape out.

Have you tried running a source component with at least 2V output directly into the Valhalla?

Though it applies to the Lyr, you might find this chart helpful from the 6moons review:
