Please post some detailed photos of these new Ultramega drivers.  I'm sure that all of us would be interested to see what these new puppies look like.  :o  Having already gone through a complete upgrade from standard drivers to Megawoofers, it would help considerably to see these before I upgrade to these new Ultras.  And please don't say you're not a good photographer...almost anyone can take halfway decent photos with today's cameras  :P

Still on this eh?  :)

Make sure you keep us posted. The latest iteration I've heard was my own pair of Largers with Megawoofers; your feedback on a direct comparison would be awesome.

I have a set of 12 & 15 Ultramegawoofers coming on Monday, 7/25 for my Large sub. I have already a installed TC Sounds 15" PR and I supose I could take some pics when I get them. Then in August have a new Large sub (with the same configuration) coming so I will have duals for my room.

A pair of subs is definitely the way to go!  i have a pair of smallers right now and on the fence between upgrading to the BB PR and either megawoofers or ultramegawoofers. The price difference is significant.

I have my Infinity IM 4.1 with built in subs so these guys only have to shoulder some of the load.

I am kind of thinking that if I am going to go ahead and expend the effort I might as well go with the ultras, but it is about 200 bucks more.

Got the 12" & 15" Ultramegawoofers installed and like "Mama"! Now this is the way to go with the Large sub. I'll post pics of the drivers later when I have the time.

Did you wire the drivers in parallel so that your Larger is now a 2 ohm sub or did you wire each driver to it's own set of binding posts and run stereo 4 ohms per channel?

I am waiting for my Megawoofers & BBPR to come in. I am wondering what load do the Megawoofers present when wired in parallel, 4 or 2ohms? We need to start posting some pics of the drivers so that other people interested in upgrading know what they look like.

Drivers wired serial to a Crown XLS 1000 amp, bridged 4 ohm @ 1100 watts. Have teh 1 & 2 channel gain dials at 3/4.

I was under the impression that the Ultras are 4 ohm drivers...no?  So wiring in series would yield an 8 ohm load to your Crown giving you 800 watts.  Still, lots of watts!

Can any give me a comparison of the advantages of the Ultramegawoofers vs. the megawoofers?  If it is just power handling then I probably don't need them, I will only be feeding them with 250 watts.

Thanks!

The drivers are 4 ohm and the bridged amp is 4 ohms and I wired it this way http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/ca/learningcenter/car/subwoofer_wiring/2DVC_4-ohm_mono.jpg but the drivers are single pole. This gives me 1100 watts at 4 ophms to 2 drivers. Right or wrong?

Disregard previous posts about wiring of the drivers to the amp in bridged mode. It is a 2 ohm load and the amp is not really rated for that. Have to revisit the amp situation.

Is this your amp?  http://www.crownaudio.com/amp_htm/xls_drivecore.htm
Why not just run the sub off of one channel for now?  550 watts.
When your other sub arrives in August run it off the other channel.  550 watts x 2 into 2 ohms.

Yes this is the amp and the drivers are 4 ohms so I would get 350 watts per channel in stereo. I have a XLS1500 Crown amp coming and it will give me 525 watts per channel  in stereo for each 4 ohm driver. This info I got from Crown tech support.

That's if you have dual binding posts on your sub and you can run the 15" on one set and the 12" on the other.  Then you will have a 4 ohm load on each set of binding posts and run you old Crown in stereo at 350 wpc or your new amp in stereo at 525 wpc (on the one sub).  Once you get your next sub you're going to either have to run each sub at 2 ohms (drivers wired in parallel) or 8 ohms (drivers wired in series).  The XLS amps are capable of handling 2 ohm stereo loads so your choices running your 2 subs will be:

Crown XLS 1000:
215 wpc (drivers in series, 8 ohm load)
550 wpc (drivers in parallel, 2 ohm load)

Crown XLS 1500:
300 wpc (drivers in series, 8 ohm load)
775 wpc (drivers in parallel, 2 ohm load)

To be honest, you could probably save your money and stick with your XLS 1000.  You will not even get 3db more more from the bigger amp.  Your big gain comes from the addition of the second sub!

Crown tech support said that the XLS is not for a 2 ohm load in bridged mode. I have dual 4 ohm drivers so I run stereo and get 350 wpc with the XLS1000. With the XLS1500 it is 525 wpc stereo and the 4 ohm drivers are rated 400 and 500 watts.

Nowhere in my post was I referring to running anything in bridged mode.  Everything I mentioned was using an amp in 2 channel mode.  Sorry if it was confusing.  :(

OK, no problem. Looking at the spec sheet for output for db on the 1000, it is at 98 db & the 1500 is at 103 db. So the amp does limit the spl output. This is not a big concern for me at this point. The SQ at 98 db of the Large sub vs the SQ of the Quad Empires at 103 db, the Large sub SQ is better and you would swear that the spl is much higher then it actually is. Of course the drivers from VMPS are rated for HF and not HO. So I do think that a 2nd Large sub will just add more to the SQ  in the room.

Riley - The Ultramega drivers are rated at 400 watts for the 12" with a RMS of 750 and 500 watts for the 15" with a RMS of 800. So the XLS1500 amp should do ok with this sub. Or do you have another recommendation for a amp?

No, I think either one of those 2 amps should be fine (XLS 1000 or XLS 1500).  Either one will handle 2 ohm stereo loads which will be perfect when you get your other sub in August.  Glad to hear that the SQ is just as good with the Ultras as with the Megas, or do you actually think it's better?  I don't suppose the drivers came with any specification sheet?  Really anxious to see those driver pics!
