Ultramegawoofers for RM2s?
« on: 17 Jul 2011, 05:01 pm »
While I am upgrading my 2 Larger subs to Ultramegas w/BBPR, would it benefit me to also upgrade my RM2's 12" phase plugged carbon-fiber drivers with Ultras as well?  I am currently high-passing the RM2s at 80Hz.  Would I notice any difference?  Would/should I run them full-range after an Ultra upgrade?  Would I need to change the 12" passive radiator in them?  Is there a 12" BBPR?

I have finished the series II of the RM 2 and all current units are upgradable.  The revisions include changes to the woofer (still WCF but lower Fs), a Big Bump PR, and waveguides.  The sound is much improved.  If you did everything the cost would be $480pr plus shipping.

I don't plan to use metal cone Ultras in the stock Series II RM 2 due to the 6dB slopes of the passive filters, which don't provide sufficient attenuation of the primary cone breakup mode around 1600Hz.  The Ultras are available to SDE users who can dial in a 24dB rolloff characteristic for the bass with the outboard (preferably modded) DCX.

My RM2s are 10 yrs old.  Not even Neos.  Spiral tweeters, not FST.  Sounds like it would be pretty costly to fully upgrade.  My Carbon fiber woofs seem to be in good shape, but I might want to replace/upgrade the PR, because of the age of the foam roll surround, if nothing else.  Will a 12" BBPR work on my RM2s?

Yes, the 12" BBPR are $55ea.  A set of waveguides will provide significant improvement as well, they're $120.
