Recommendations on component stand
« on: 17 Jul 2011, 02:43 pm »
I'm in the market for a new component rack and am wondering if anyone has some experience/recommendation for a particular one.  I'm looking for something relatively low-slung, that can house 5-6 components and a flat screen TV on top.  I'm strictly 2-channel - the TV on top is simply a concession to the fact this rack will be in our main living space.  I'd like it to look like decent furniture, but be primarily designed to support audio gear.  I'm willing to spend decent money for it, but am not looking for a $5000 or $10000 techno-behemoth that will isolate things from an earthquake.

Any help/insights are appreciated - thanks!

racksandstands.com has a selection.  You just looking for components and a small TV on top (something of normal component width may not be suitable for some bigger TVs)?

I like Salamander too - I use their Synergy line in the main system:

I also have the matching end table and a couple of media racks to match.  You can see end table and the media racks in the pics below:

I built an open shelf 3-component wide AV rack because I wanted something built out of solid hardwood and an open style was far easier for me to build.  However, if I had been aware of Standout Designs at the time, I would have given them serious consideration.

They feature 100% solid hardwood (Ash or Maple or premium Cherry or Walnut), USA made, and shipped completely assembled.  Just another option for you to look at.  http://www.standoutdesigns.com/default.asp

Beautiful work.  I used to have 2 Target Metal Racks (filled with heavy stuff), one with wood shelves and one with glass shelves.  I gave the one with the wood shelves to my brother and kept the one with the glass shelves for the basement.  More of an industrial modern look

Phil, how tall are the cabinets and how big is your screen?

Time to start surfing' the web, especially if you're trying to match other furniture.

They are the 40 inch (tall) towers.  The screen is 100 inches (diagonal and I believe about 87 inches wide).  You can see where the projector is mounted (I had to chop up the column and it rests on top).  Was not sure how much room I had with the moulding in the room.

The Thiel 3.7s are about 45 inches high.  The basement screen I have (in the secondary basement system) is 88 inches as that is all I could fit comfortably in the area I needed to put it.

Some general ideas:

Timbernation is one of the better vendors I see around, Ikea for really cheap if you can find what you want, but frankly most audiophile racks are either crap or grossely overpriced.

Consider hiring a trim carpenter (with the economy/housing market) builders are dying for work.  He could match your furniture, build to your exact wants, even do a built-in.

You didn't ask about design, but in 40 years at this, I've never heard a rack contribute, except negatively on soft wooden floors (consider wall mounts, especial if you have vinyl).

And above all else, find something you can slide in and out to make equipment changes easier.

As part of the consideration process, I ordered a set of finish samples from Standout Designs. I ordered the standard finish samples, which has 4 choices in the package. You can see which ones on their website.

If anyone is interested in checking these out, I'd be happy to mail the samples to you - just send me a pm with your info.

I bought the Init.  Smoked glass, well built and doesn't break the bank.
