6B SST2 idle power consumption
« on: 16 Jul 2011, 05:36 pm »
The only thing keeping me from buying one is the idle power consumption. It might stay on for long hours during the day. The wife and the baby sitter are not to be trusted in that regard. I dont see any info on the Bryston website regarding this. Can anyone enlighten me?
Or can someone actually go and measure if there is a 6B and a kill-a-watt handy. I would be very thankful. If its too high... I will be going in for an ICE amp based multichannel amp.

Thanks!

If there are provisions in your system for remote trigger on, you can use that feature too.  I personally just turn it on when I'm almost ready to use it (my 6BSST).

Thanks for the link!
Wow ! These things are power hogs!!
Not that I am ever going to use these at full load, but 2100 watts !!

Wow, 2100 watts hungry beast!. That is more then 2x 10,000 BTU air conditioners running.  :o

I have been wondering about the power consumption for some time.  According to the Bryston specification my 7BSST2 amplifiers draw 215 watts each at idle.  If I have my BDP-1, BDA-1, BP-26 and the 7BSST2 X 2 powered on but not playing music, actual power consumption (measured with a Fluke 322 clamp meter and power splitter) is about 190 watts.  Playing music at normal volume increases power consumption to about 325 watts.  If I measure a lamp with a 100 watt bulb that is close to what I measure giving me some confidence of the measurement accuracy.  So, given that what I measure is nowhere close to what the specs are telling me, I would appreciate any comment  regarding what others have experienced.  It seems to me that total power consumption is a non-issue.

I've never really measured any of my amps (and I have a few systems).  Just sold my 14BSST but still use a 6BSST for the center and rears.  Over the last couple of years (and the house is now 14 years old), I've replaced the windows and had to replace the 1st zone AC last year and just replaced the 2nd zone.  Got new furnaces too.  So I really don't consume what I did 3 years back.  I have mostly those energy efficient bulbs and even have a battery powered motion detecting light that goes on when I walk down the basement steps to save a few watts.  When I got a new bedroom TV about a year and I half back I went with an LED vs. Plasma as while I don't watch tons, it is a bit more energy efficient.  I leave the amps off, except when I listen and it's not tons of hours.  I'd rather buy something that sounds better and save energy on the bigger things that are on more often.
