Footers for Bryston gears
« on: 16 Jul 2011, 04:11 am »
Just wondering if any of you guys change the stock rubber footers on the cd1,da1,pre amp and amp to spikes footers for vibrations isolation purposes.
Saw one in this forum a cd1 with spike footers, really look cool.

I was just thinking about this same question on the way to Dunkin Donuts this morning.  And for those who respond, did it improve the sound and how?

Hi. I'm a firm believer in the value of isolation as an effective and relatively inexpensive tweak. Currently using Audiquest Big Feet under my preamp, Herbies Ultrasonic Tube Dampers inside my preamp, and Pro Bearings under my BCD-1. Under my previous amps I was using Navcom Silencers but my current amps are far too heavy for those so I'm thinking about Herbies Tenderfeet for those. For me, what is gained through enhanced isolation is in a word, clarity.

There are more ways to skin a Cat than ya think. Footers can be affective in what they are designed to do. Saying that different footers have different sonic outcomes.
There are some basics here. First isolation from below is desirable for the TT, transport and DAC. Tubed gear as well benifits from isolation as well as draining of the resonance.
With so many products to choose from what to try can be confusing. As an end result I'm looking for more clarity and less noise meaning more of the music comes through. Try different designs and discover their differences.
No one size fits all. All is system dependant. One can overdo the affect real easy. Experimentation and listening is the only way to tell. Have fun trying.

Just a different line of thought here... and might not cost much:
When I was a grad student a few years back, one of the professors of Neurophysiology, who had an awesome lab, needed to isolate all his gear from all kinds of background hum - 60Hz/vibrations etc while doing nerve and muscle studies. He would always use Tennis balls, partially cracked open, just like we would use vibrapods. And it was very effective. I was amazed then seeing yellow tennis balls (probably used) under under machines which cost a lot of money!! I am much more amazed now, looking back at that strategy... I might even give it a shot one of these days.

I use #10 butyl rubber (chemical lab equipment) stoppers under many of my electronic items.
My racks have tempered glass shelves, and the butyl rubber is just right for them.
I also use the stoppers under my Bryston amp, and under my PS Audio Power conditioners (I use tiptoes under the Furman) power conditioners.
They are decent and VERY CHEAP. The 'VERY CHEAP' being an important feature. At least compared to Hundreds of dollar type feet.
My feet cost $1.25 each locally. I own dozens and dozens of them.

btw, I really liked the HRS rack in the last link.  I did talk to the the designer at the recent Capital Audiofest and it is designed right.  I would need three of them (or pair down to two perhaps) and when I found out it was $9k each, it was a little too much.  The designer or the rack liked (the design principles of) my Gingko Audio Cloud 10 platforms I use under transports.

Has anyone tried those little silicone nobbies (come in various sizes for under objects  to prevent slipping)? Just a thought

Are you talking about Bright Star Audio 'Isonode' feet?  If so I have used the cheapest small ones on an old transport.  They help

These are the Bright Star Audio feet - http://www.brightstaraudio.com/isonode.htm

I also have several of these and find them helpful on transports -

I've used cones in some instances and still do, but I don't find them overly effective in vibration control.  I had a conversation with Michael Latvis of Harmonic Resolution Systems (the last link in my first post) and he also indicated cones are not an effective vibration eliminator.  The explanation can also be found at Bright Star Audio's site (link in my first post and they have a FAQ area)  "Q:  Do pointed cones really provide good vibration isolation?"  I also have Black Diamond cones and other cones as well.

You just put them on the botton of the stock footers. since these ones grab better than the stock....  Well that is what I saw.
