Power consumption of Stratos Amps
« on: 12 Apr 2004, 04:57 pm »
Hello all, first time post here, I have been lurking for several months and am hoping if some of you Odyssey fans can help me out.  Wondering if anyone has any information on the average power consumption of the stratos ht-3 and mono extreme amps?  I am interested in these amps and am also currently building a dedicated theater room and am wondering what kind of power I need to plan for.

Many Thanks

My mono extreme amps pull 35 watts each at idle.  My old stereo stratos pulled 30 watts at idle. The HT-3 is probably about 35 watts.

The extremes have an 800va power supply, so they can draw a maximum of about 800watts each at full power. It's pretty unlikely you will hit this very often. :D

I believe the HT-3 has 2 400VA transformers, so it's maximum potential current draw is probably 800W as well. Again, it's pretty unlikely you will ever hit those levels, especially on a continuous basis.

800W @ 120Volts is about 6.6 amps, so they will run happily on a 20 amp circuit.

Guys:

Weekend project was to reverse-engineer my Stratos Stereo Extreme, derive schematic diagrams, and document all voltages/currents.

Measured power draw is 25 Watts/channel, 50 Watts total.  VA should be nearly equal.

In comparison, my (old but updated) Hafler DH-220 draws approximately 75W (warmer heat sinks) and has a lower audio output power rating (verified by measurement).

Yes, the Stratos sounds better (though the recent rebuild of the Hafler got it close to our fave amp).

Think of it this way ... running the Stratos 24x7 costs far less than leaving the front porch and garage marker lights on.
