You may not want them, but hardcore audiophiles who want removeable power cord do, and they want magic caps to go with that.

And I hate it when that sort of stupidity is rewarded or encouraged.

The fact is that most people who want the IEC removeable power cord want it because they believe a different cord will make a difference in performance, they don't like a trailing cord when moving a component around, or both.

There aren't that many inexpensive power cords around for them to try. What they really want are the thick, nice looking braided, with gold plated contact in the plug type power cord.

Most don't want a 250 lb. unit, if the amp has an analog power supply they want some beef in the transformer, 40 - 75 lb. will get the job done.  And most don't want a wooden crate, a sturdy cardboard double box with 2" to 3" of semi-elastic foam is perfect.

A pair of Pass Labs XA 160.5 monoblock weighs about 300lbs.

A pair of Ada Audio Design MPX-ii weighs about 350lbs.

And a pair of Classe Omega monoblocks weighs 384 lbs. (and I'm sure there are even heavier amplifiers), but so what?

AVA is changing to the IEC cord because of the number people who have either posted here or emailed Frank to say they would buy an AVA if only ..... .  I previously have gone on record in this circle saying a captive cord was most likely a technically superior and reliable connection, but that I preferred the convenience of the removeable IEC cord.

Since it has become more or less the audio industry standard, most of my components do have IEC power jacks.  My power cord of choice has been the Volex 17604 shielded 14/3 at a cost of $5.81 each.  Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I know I'm not alone.

I like the IEC.  My outlet is 12" from my amp, buying a shorter power cable allows for better wire management.

Could just cut it shorter. I am sure that Frank would be happy to tell you how.

I don't think they sell any 12" AC cord, they are 3' min. Just another poor arguing point for an arguement that doesn't hold any water.

Wow, it really is 1 ft. congratulations to you for finding it. I guess I should have googled before I made my comment. Still, my computer desk to the wall outlet is more than 12", I wonder how many of these they've sold, hey could you find that out for me?

You could even get something fancy-schmancy like this:

We use these on our Pathology analyzers. Should be ok-fine for audio. You can also get them in 15 feet length.

The parts express cord is pretty much the same cord as supplied on all units now.

Do not use an 18awg cord on any of the power amps. 16awg (as supplied) is the minimum gauge.

I use cables as short as possible on everything in the rack - keeps things tidy.  The inexpensive 14awg cords from TCA, Inc. work just fine for my purposes (http://www.tca-inc.net).  The model is NEMA 5-15P to IEC320 C13, 15 amp.

These start at $6 for for the 12", and the 3 foot is $10.  The 16awg cord would be a little less.

At that price I ordered a bunch, and can still drink good ale.

Infinite Cables (http://www.infinitecables.com/) has good, cheap, reliable NEMA 5-15P to IEC 60320 C13 Power Cords - 14 AWG - 125 Volt, 15 Amp cables for those of us of the Canadian persuasion. I keep a bunch of these around because you never know when the need will arise...
