Planar sound in a desktop speaker?
« on: 11 Jul 2011, 12:29 pm »
I have Maggie MC-1s with open baffle 15" subs in my living room. Absolutely love them. I just bought a shiny new iMac, and decided a good set of desktop speakers were in order. All of the desktop speakers I've heard so far sound awful, including the B&W and Focal systems.

I don't have a ton of room. Bass and slam are not things that are important to me, detail and timbre are.

I know Eminent Tech produced a desktop setup, but that has been discontinued for a while. Any hope for a planar-head to get acceptable desktop sound after being spoiled my Magnepans?

If I could keep it under a grand, I'd be happy.

OK.  The founders of Camelot Technology have these: http://www.xhifi.com/

You might find a used pair of Monsoon Desktop speakers.. they are defunct but their panels live on in VMPS' (and *ahem* av123's Strata Mini) speakers...

Hey JT that is a hell of a find, just curious what you can come up with above $1000, just be neat to see.

And a lil' off topic..... but what do you think these would be like? It's like $1900 for both the speakers and the sub:

Those are Dynaudio PC speakers, you will see the link to the matching 10" sub.

 here:

.... and would you wager that the planar PC speaker system you posted might be better or worse? Or just different?

And I've always wanted a pair of Monsoons, if anyone has a pair I'd love to buy them just to have them. The whole basis of my audiophile experience has been nice multimedia speakers, it's how I've got my start, and those to me where something I missed out on. Just to have them would be cool even though my main system now would far exceed them.

Monsoons: I have MM-2000's, the four channel model, which has a better woofer than the two channel MM-1000. Also some of the smaller ones which use a cone mid and aren't as good. I love them, and you might be able to pick up a pair on Ebay, but keep in mind that these are getting on in years and the plating on the neodynium magnets can start to flake, which causes buzzing. If you do a search, you'll find various articles on replacing them. Also, on the 1000's, the volume control pucks tend to die with age, though there are various fixes and workarounds. So -- I'd say Monsoons if you're on a budget and can do some fixing up if necessary (or don't mind the occasional buzzing on loud piano notes, that sort of thing).

Have you seen the new Mini Maggie thread? It sounds like they're ideal for what you want.
