Harmon Kardon Digital Receivers
« on: 11 Apr 2004, 11:04 pm »
I just saw that HK has some new all-digital recievers coming soon, very much like the current one but much more powerful.  I think the top of the line is over 110 watts X 7 ch.  Has anyone had a chance to listen to the DPR-1001?

You'd think the HK models might be a cut above the Panny models, at least with regard to build quality/parts quality.  They do seem to be aiming a little higher, at least the prices would point that way!

Rob.

Was thinking similar things a couple weeks ago when I saw them online at J&RMusic.com.

I saw a lower end offering at $499.99 at 50w x 7 that may be very appealing for small rooms and or efficient speakers.  Or, in my case, active crossover-ing (less power needed I've found this way)

Right now you can only get the 50 X 7 model, but pretty soon the high powered ones will be out.  Having Logic7 might be pretty interesting, too.

You'd think that, but to me HK products seem very cheaply built.  A far cry from the HK of years ago.  Maybe I just notice them more, but I've seen several postings at the AVS forum regarding problems with HK receivers (more than the other major brands).

HK!
Hope their QC is better than it was when I bought things from them.

I am hearing Sarp is the Digi Amps to watch for,but they shall be pricey. They are said to go head-head with Gamut.

Well I bought a factory reconditioned HK3340 70 wpc stereo receiver about 15 months ago for $160 delivered (for my doppy little HT setup).  Had it back in the shop twice after losing the left channel and then getting loud crackling sound from that same channel.

Works fine now.  The factory rep said if it went bad again they'd replace it with new.  They also tracked down the tech who worked on it (3 strikes and they're out of a job according to him).  So perhaps they are working on quality control.

Speaking of which, yes, the controls feel very, very cheap.  OTOH most folks use a remote.  The money seems to have gone into the transformer (the HK 3340 weighs as much as my 100 wpc Rotel receiver) and its 42 amp rating (who runs 8 gauge wire with a 40 amp breaker to a cheap receiver?).

I was just looking at the upcoming top-o-the-line HK digital receiver:  Sure looks light on inputs for a $1600 model! :o   2 component vid inputs?  2 coaxial & 2 optical inputs on the back?  For $1600?  Sure, there's a couple of extra digital inputs on the front, but that's not a very practical place for 'em except for hooking up a game or camcorder.

Still, looks pretty interesting otherwise.

OneCall has the DPR1001 (50w) on clearance for $477.09 (list $999).  There is one brief thread here, which is about the only info I've been able to find out about this receiver.

I think the HK Recs are using D1 digital amps.
They had some that used Apogee I think though, but switched to D1.

Check out D1's web site (you'll have to google it-I don't have the link).

I saw 'em at the CES and they showed a pic of the D1 module in a HK rec.

I don't think they explain how they're doing the processing other than marketing hype which of course tells you they're the best and flawless.

I don't know if it's taking a digital signal like Sony (their S-Master Pro chips) or Pannie (using Tex. In chips) or if it's analog like Tripath.
