Storm damage is repaired......
« on: 6 Jul 2011, 08:16 pm »
Our 4th of July weekend didn't start out so swell as we had a "river of wind" go thru the entire state of Minnesota, doing lots of damage in the rural areas. Of course, none of this got really any TV coverage, but the damage is in the multi-millions. Farms have severe damage (trees, machine sheds, graineries), power poles leveled and vast areas without any power.

I did not have those problems, but I did loose the roof section over my deck, some rain gutter and downspouts and fascia along some roof line. I also had some shingles damaged. Of course, like with most home owner insurance policies, they have been raising the rates so drastically every year, that now many folks have very high deductibles.

Well, it helps to have friends in the construction industry. The shingles got fixed yesterday, the rain gutters and fascia fixed this morning. It pays to get some people lined up to do the work as soon as possible. others may wait weeks if not months to get someone to do the repairs.

I just say to myself that it could have been much worse.

And the entire state is shut down. Are the powers that be funding emergency services? Must be a real mess.

What emergency services? Out here, we take care of ourselves. Neighbor helping neighbor. I know this concept is unheard of in urban areas, but it actually does work, once you start to stop thinking of just yourself.

That is what happened Friday night after the storm, neighbor helping neighbor. Then we had some beer!

Here in the hills of Vermont we splurge and drink blackberry brandy after such occasions. And yes I know, all cows are cattle not all cattle are cows. You're picking on the wrong guy. I can out hick anybody.

Hey Wayner, good to hear your damage was relatively minor and repairs completed. As for it making the 'news', not surprising as it's mostly local current events, this house fire, that traffic jam, and the occasional international event, the royals in Canada. I find more national news on the CBC than we get on the networks.

Hope you had the tables spinning along with that beer afterwards. Suds almost always goes better with tunes.  :thumb:

Those days are over unless you are in a small town, but if you are in a small town, then it only applies to your own kind. I know my comment will go to the waste bin in a heart beat, but it's true.

Well, I have a guy from Japan that lives on the end of the street. He's a great guy. It ain't the color of your skin (we are all just shades of tan), but what is in the heart. rcag_ils, if you lived on my street and you needed help, we'd be there in a flash. Don't mater what  your race or nationality or religious beliefs, but after we are done helping "cuttin' up the tree branches or what ever, you better have some beer or that's the last time we help! (just kidding).

I live in a small town and strongly disagree.

And that brings up another point. When you sit in your own little "hut" and start eye'n up the neighbors and dreaming about what is all wrong with them, it's time to get your ars outside and try to make things a little better, rather then a little worse. I have a bit of Dakota Indian in me, but otherwise, I'm just another mutt, a mixture of from so many places, I wonder why they all came here (to the US). The result is that storms can bring out the best in people. It is the silver lining in the regular cloud. Besides, people from different parts have great food (to go along with the beer) and I really like fun food adventures!

I was in Sidney, MT fifteen years ago working on a project, one of the guys that I worked with was black from the east coast, after work we went to this bar called Cattle Ac to have a beer, the bouncers in there found some excuses to throw the black guy out. The excuse was, he was dancing with a local white girl, some guys in there bumped into him on purpose, then arguement took place, and the black guy got thrown out, and the white guy got to stay. I don't sit in my little hut, but have traveled to many places in many states, and seen many things.

Then the white guys should have stood by him and left too.  In the 50's that's what my father did when his black friends were denied service.  He figured if people wanted my dad around, they BETTER want his friends, too.

To do otherwise is to disgrace your friends.

Now, let's get this thread back on topic.    :thumb:

Yea, let's piss off some insurance agent too :no_see: :no_hear: :no_speak: or is it :cyclops:

Sorry to hear about all the damage from a forum instead of weather reports ala TWC. Glad your damage is almost all taken care of. Being in the Northeast we are lucky weather wise, mostly. Flooding is our biggest concern, and last winter snow related roof cave-ins was added to the list. We have 4 sump pumps and have raised the grade at the front of the house. Thank the maker our utility's infrustructure is excellent. I hope everyone you know came away without getting hurt.

Everyone is fine. This storm was weird as it was claimed to be straight line wind, but when you see farm sites with the trees all twisted together I have to scratch my head. There are rumors that the wind gusts may have been in the 80 to 90 mile an hour variety. I think the bad element to all of this was that the wind seemed to pulse quite a bit. It would get quiet, then it would just go nuts. The second gust got our roof.

I'm just glad I didn't loose any trees. You can replace a roof, but a 20 year old tree is the pits. Considering it all, we came out pretty darn good. Now I have more time to spin some vinyl.

You are really lucky Wayne, I had to drive 1500 miles and pay $300 to see a storm only a bit worse than the one that took a bite out of your house.  :)

Best regards,

Frank

We had severe weather in a couple of nearby counties. Sorry for your mess. BTW, it was determined that we had 93 MPH gust when our "straight line" wind came thru.
