When the volume knob goes way clockwise.....
« on: 28 Jun 2011, 11:29 pm »
.....do you let your system warm up first?

Granted, my high SPL tantrum days are fewer and further in between then years gone by, but it still happens on those "special days".

So, the question is:

Do you slowly 'notch up' the knob in increments over a certain period of time before you reach your Euphoria...

-or-

Is is necessary to allow things to warm up/loosen up to operating temperatures before you wake the dead?

Also....do you feel it's "necesary" for the longevity of the equipment, or do you just think it's a good idea to do it slowly?

Tubes in power amps are involved, if that's matters.

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Hey!

I usually let My SET amps and tubed pre warm up without playing anything for 15-30mins first.

As for cranking it up. I don't listen to music loud but when I do go a bit more than usual I like to start with normal level for a track or two than turn it up.

Take care,

As SET man said. 15 to 30 minutes then let her go.  Then about one hour of playing time all is perfect.

Yea, my amp takes about 45m to warm up. Then I tend to move up a little if things are singing. Or maybe it's that second glass of wine. ...John

I too let the system warm with tuner playing low in the backround for 30 minutes minimum. Then BOOOOM, BOOOOM BOOOOM it's 1812 all over again! :thumb:

I don't bother waiting. A couple of minutes and the tubes should be good to go. I'd like to hear any explanation of why not. (Not talking about change in sound, just about whether there is any need to "baby" tubes for 30 mins or so)

Exactly. And not just tubes, the drivers themselves too, or anything else for that matter.
Basically I'm asking if there's a reason I should warm things up slowly with regard to the longevity of the equipment.
At this point, in that mood, sounds quality has taken seat.

I tend to treat my system like I treat myself:

Turn system on. (Get out of bed.)

System warming up. (Coffee brewing.)

System playing music. (Pouring second cup.)

Ready to go and jammin'. (Ready to go and jammin'.)

It will sound better after transformer is warm (1 hour) but no harm in pushing it to full power once the tubes are hot and bias is stable, probably 5 minutes is safe.  1812 is a good choice for today!
