playin distorted when updating/writing to HDD
« on: 25 Jun 2011, 03:13 pm »
HI All,

Previously i reported an distortion issue. Now I found out that has to do with updating. Whenever I play from the HDD, the BDP starts updating the front usb's also, and the sound gets garbled and distorted. Pulling those out immediately solves this.

I do wonder why those usb sticks are being updated because they were in there already a long time. I get the feeling it had to do with writing new files to the HDD over the network. does it update everything again?

Is it expected behaviour that sound gets distorted when updating or writing files to the HDD. Cant it play and write at the same time?

greetings,
Marius

forgot to say that the front display does keep indicating the bdp is updating. As far as I know it is not....hope you can see on the pic. might that have to do with the fact that in my safari browser the update " Wheel" in the tab is moving and visible al the time, and in the statusbar it keeps loading items (the number of which keeps growing also)?

I have no issues with distortion and updating.  But have stopped using the max webpage to control the BDP because I have heard dropouts while using it.

You might try to do a reset (via webpage or menu) and do another update and see if that helps.    For me, only the first update was slow and as I copied additional files to the attached HDD, each additional update was fast.    I don't use the thumb drives, but they could very well be different as they are typically in the 10-20 Mbps range where a USB HDD are in the 300-400 Mbps

What do you control it with?

look at the pic: updating all the time, in browsertab visible, status bar, and no usbsticks loaded, no new music on the HDD...puzzling this is.

I prefer mPod and mPad to control the BDP.

Looks like you might have a bad HDD then.   If you have a Windows computer, you might run checkdisk or whatever it's called with the later windows to see if anything can be repaired.

Hi Folks,

When you restart the BDP-1 the update will come up on the display for a couple of minutes as it is simply checking for any changes in the attached drives. The previous loaded  libraries are available immediately for playback though.

Sure,
I wasn't restarting though, and it stayed on until I rebooted. Not a couple of minutes, I went shopping in the meanwhile.....

Hi marius - it seems like you have had continuing issues with that particular 1TB drive?

don't know James (btw is Lacie 500 ),
sadly i have the feeling it is BDP1 behaviour... :( But even it turns out to be the Lacie, I think the BDP1 should not hang because of it, and give an errormessage, and continue to play the other inputs.

I hope it is this particular serialnumber, and my order, which should be arriving soon, is not affected.

But i will certainly look into this particular Lacie drive. Do you have any other non-powered Hdd recommendations other than the Seagate's which apparently I can not seem to buy overhere?

i use a Western Digital 750 GB drives   Below the 500mA requirement...

I would guess either that your Lacie is either bad or is drawing more than 500mA.    I would try another for sure.

I will.
mine is a Lacie Rikiki Go 500gb. How to know whether it draws more than 500mA?
It is not mentioned on the package (as far as I can read without my glasses...)

well, this is mentioned:

"NOTE: Mobile harddrives may require additional power when used with certain hubs, PC cards extension cables, etc."
could that be the explanation: reading and writing drawing to much power, but when only playing or writing: no problems?

Marius
or is it a standard NOTE, the industry puts on all HDD's.

I will.

It's tough to say.   I can't find any specs about that for that drive but since most 500gb drives are rated 500mA or less it should be fine.   Maybe try a non USB 3.0 version?

The error message does indicate some sort of hardware failure and if it is a brand new drive go try and run disk repair/scan disk to see if there is an issue. If not the, I would have to assume it exceeding the 500mA.

will do that. Is does mention it to be a High Speed USB2.0. USB boost also, whatever that may be.

off to run scan disk..

I would get say a small USB thumdbrive - say 16 or 32 bit and see if the issues go away - it sounds more and more like a power issue with that drive.  I just bought a drive this weekend of 2 TB and it is powered and works superb with the BDP-1.

The standard for power USB from the USB port is 500MA and Marius is correct they do not  seem to give that figure in their specs

Looks like a Bryston designed storage solution would:
a. Get rid of a lot of support calls
b. Generate increased customer satisfaction
c. Help out a lot of non-techie customers
d. Bring in even more income to Bryston

Just an idea?

Hi Terrry

I agree but I have to say it only seems like certain  drives have issues with limited power. I have a Seagates 1.5 TB drive that runs off the USB port in the BDP without issue.

Also of the 500 or so BDP's we have out there this only shows up in a very few cases.

That's very reassuring James - great product!

Marius,
To find out if you have a power issue with that drive you could pick up a USB Y-cable which would enable you to attach your drive to two of the BDP-1 USB ports which would double the power available to the drive.
