Windows Media Player and iTunes will not natively play FLAC files, but there are a number of players that will, including

foobar 2000

J.River Media Jukebox 14

I'm sure there are plenty of free program to play FLAC files, but I have and use J. River Media Center.  Plays FLAC files, has a great user interface and also uses WASAPI (bypasses Window's sound processing. . .or whatever).  It costs about $50 US. . . and I think it's worth every penny.

Klite mega codec will play most anything, including FLAC.

VideoLan (VLC Media Player) is a good place to start. It will play almost anything in any format, even some damaged files that other players can't play.

It's also fairly "light" on your system. You can always switch to something with a more sophisticated user interface like JRiver later.
