Super V in Baltic Birch Enclosure
« on: 20 Jun 2011, 10:35 pm »

I am finishing up a second pair of Super V's in all baltic birch. Includes four separate grill covers.  One for the bottom two drivers and one for the top, modified footing for a more professional look and stain of your choice.  Plans are straight from Danny's website, with the following modifications:
The 3 degree slant was taken out, can use the feet to put more rake in it
The back area behind bottom woofer was extended 2 inches to accommodate mounting the sub amp in     the rear
The sides were increased to 1.5 inches of baltic birch to help with rigidity
The rear deck below the tweeter is to be used as a crossover compartment with secret cover
The curve of the side panel behind the woofer was gently modified to cover the amplifier from view
Bottom mounting plate/stand was added for a more professional look
To populate, please email Danny at info@gr-research.com for pricing
Buyer responsible for shipping charges

I'll post pictures later in the week.  If purchased prior to Friday, choose your stain color!

He does great work people. A steal really, I hope he's still doing this stuff when im ready to "V".

I bought his Baltic birch n3 enclosures and I feel like they are beyond a tremendous value, they were a steal.

Really! Thanks! No hurry. When you get a chance. :)

You do GR a great service. Not everyone has the space or tools or capacity to build enclosures and also not a lot of people have tons of money to spend on enclosures. You allow more people to enjoy Danny's work.

Ok,  These were from Wednesday and my first shot at them.  Modifications were listed above, but here is what I found out.  In my three car garage, with my Rigid Table saw, router table, band sander, I was able to finish and glue the entire set of 2 pairs in 8 hours.  I had to do some fine tuning on the sides to fit in the amp as well as the cross over.  I ate lunch for an hour and thought about changes and other mods I would do.  At this point in time, I do not think I really like making these, even though much easier than the V2 speakers from last month.  I am not sure why I dont like building these, but I had a chance to sit down yesterday with a pair of N3TL (BBirch, No Rez, upgrade caps, no plats though) and I really like them a lot.  Low end was great and with an added sub (two gr 12's with Pex 370s) I was really happy.  I though about how I could place the 12 sub in the side and stick with a sealed N3s, but there does not seem to be enough room.  This was an idea I got from one of Danny's retired models.   I have to wait until the rumored 8 inch gr sub comes out.  Her are pics promised, i'll post the finished ones this weekend or Monday.  Back to the N3TL, I really like them, more than the V2, have not heard the super v... .so uhhhhhmmmmm....  Thoughts anyone...Tom Petty's box set on an oppo 83 though a Integra 40.1 to ATI 1506 and Outlaw 7125...sounds great..... 5.1 rocks

Super job Jon!  The glue ups look cool without the sides...   What kind of glue do you use? I just use Titebond original.

Speaker building is so much fun.

R,

Just use titebond, the one that washes off easy with water... the other version always sticks to me.  I tweaked the sides alittle to allow for a more fluid look.  Thus the reason the two laminated 3/4 side pieces have a different shape.  Thanks.

Wondering what areas the V2 fell short of the N3TL?

I have built both the V1 and the N3TL, although the N3 is an excellent speaker I found that the V1 outperformed it in virtually every area and this was before pairing the V1 with a 2a3 SET, that took it to another level.

2a3 SET amps :thumb: now we're getting somewhere, I have been trying to decide between 300B mono's and the 2a3 mono's. I have been thinking that the 300B might be the choice because you can get almost 20 watts out of some of the new tubes available. Anyone been down this road and found the perfect amp for the Super V?

Both of the above are hard to find at any type of value. I guess people don't want to part with their treasured SET's even in these tough times. Then there's always the temptation to go with the Cary 300SEI.

Here are some shots from before final spray.  The subs are finished in a Merlot color, finally with the shine.  The merlot Super V will also look like this when done.. couple more coats until I am happy.  The black, is the typically satin black.  Notice the hidden compartment for the xo, as well as the slidable amp mount on the bottom.  They'll all ship Tuesday hopefully...             JP

I like the hidden compartment for the XO.

Do you need to know a special knock to be able to see them?
