Thoughts on the Music Hall 5

There is a local sale of the music hall 5 for $275.00.  It is complete and seems to be stock and in nice shape.  They were $500 new, but this is first table that I have seen locally that was in a friends price range.  Any thoughts, my friend is getting this to listen to his fathers extensive vinyl collection.  His first step into hifi.

The MMF-5 was my first table. In a direct A/B comparison to a Rega P-25 w/ RB-700 tonearm and a Grado Platinum (I believe) cartridge, it held it's own. My primary complaint was the amount of sub-sonic feedback it would generate (e.g. woofer pumping).

If I could get a Technics SL-1200 mk II for the same price (with, say, a Denon DL-110 cart), I'd take the Technics. If you go with the Music Hall, you'll want to do some experimenting with mats on that glass platter on the MMF-5.

Hey Buck,
LOL, an MMF-5 vs a P-25. Which do you suppose has the worse wow and flutter?

Do your friend a favor and forget all of the above. The price of 1200s is up due to discontinuation. I'm sure you can find a nice DD well within budget. Just check out the functions cause it will probably be old.

I had an MMF-5 for a few years after it first came out. It was a pretty good table, but had audible wow and flutter that was especially noticeable on piano and flute.
