Modding an Acopian AC->DC Power Supply
« on: 18 Jun 2011, 04:34 am »
Guys

I have a 24v Acopian power supply that I would like to upgrade.  I think there's enough room (with a shoehorn) for a felix.  Any thoughts on the efficacy of a felix, before or after  the transformer and also vs. before the PS's output (on the DC)?

Thanks guys,
Jim

Jdubs,

I'll let Occam chime in on this one, might want to send him a pm directing him to this thread. In any case, I have always used Felixes before the primary of a transformer, i.e. right after the AC outlet in all my projects. I've always found an improvement as well. Dynamics are increased, high end is always smoother, midrange is more open, and microdynamics are improved. To quote from the late Allen Wright, basically there is an increase in the 'downward dynamic range.'

Best of luck,

Anand.

I have the Acopian PS for the music player PC plugged into a Felix, works just dandy. I didn't try and fit one inside the chassis though.

Thanks guys.  I took a closer look inside and in an effort to save me some headaches, I'll look to put a felix on the input power cable and (maybe) the output DC cable.  I have a couple that I put together using the group buy boards and they need to find a home.

Btw, I'm really impressed with this ps!  Rock solid 24v and a trim pot makes it easy to dial things in.

I have an Acopian  AC to 5v DC with a Felix in front. Works great and it's been awhile but I remember that the Felix did have a noticeable positive effect on SQ. I'll be interested as how you'll implement the Felix on the DC side.

Jim,

I'm doing basically the same thing, but building the felix board and psu box in another chassis and then have a bybee music rail waiting to be installed on the output.

This will be for the alix board, and I have very high expectations for how it will all work out when done.

Of course once you get to 24v and more than a couple amps, things get a bit more involved with the bybees, and at this point I'm definitely not the guy to ask, but 9v at 1 amp should be no probem.

Jim

I would replace the carbon film resistors (if the unit has them) with metal film resistors for lower thermal noise if this unit is powering analog audio circuitry.

Hey guys

Sorry for dropping off the face of the earth for a while with this thread.  I was out of the country for a couple of weeks and have been tied up ever since I go back into town.

Anyway, I put the Acopian ps into my system (stock) and its working great.  Instead of putting anything inside the PS, I'm just going to put a felix on the input power cord and call it good.
