That is a nice looking 1219. Congrats. When I was a teenager, I had a 1229Q. I wish I still had it. Despite what others may say, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a rim drive Dual.

Thanks Nels - I really have no strong affiliation to any brand or design.
Sounds pretty impressive so far with it's V15 II, but not really on par with the Denon DL-S1 shod LP12.
Am planning on popping on a better cart to see how it can really sing.

That is a nice looking tt. I had one of those back in 74. First turntable I purchased with my own money. No idea what ever happened to it.
That really was a bargain find there.

Thanks - am still surprised that after some only fairly minor fettling all functions perfectly.

That's great news eclein.
Certainly if it's anything like this 1219 you're in for a treat.

Cheers

I have a Linn and a VPI HW 19. I hang at the Linn forum for the LP 12 and for those folks the Linn is the only way to go. But I like having two set up and don't think much about which one is better than the other, I am happy to spin both. I really like the periphery ring to flatten out warps on the VPI.

Having more than one is fun, just ask Wayner! My daughter was just remarking how much she likes here Dual 1216 with the Shure M91ED.

Dual decks  :)

Yep! I've generally had more than just the Sondek.

I recently sold a minty TD-160 to a friend who was wanting to return to vinyl.
He remains very pleased with it.

So this 1219 fills the gap quite nicely.
I've got it set up on my main system now, side by side with the Linn.
I'm planning to use this for general listening and use the LP12 for more serious sessions.
It's a good way to keep the miles down on the DL-S1 too.

I've popped a Grado on the Dual now just to see how it performs with a known cart. Tinkering with loading adjustment and headshell damping at the moment, other than a slight bloom to the bottom end on some recordings all is turning out quite nicely.

Cheers

Dave,

Go buy yourself some LAST Stylast....the stuff is truly wondrous at preserving styli.  They claim up to 10x more life - I believe it.

I think it's USD$35 here now...so it's probably 35 quid there or so in the translation.  Even at that price for only a couple ounces of fluid it's worth it.  I have the ORIGINAL bottle I bought 25 years ago and I think I'm at about 60% used now.

I apply after each 2 album sides....it's yet another painful ritual to add to the many already involved in vinyl playback, but for pricey (and simply superb) carts like the Denon DL-S1, it's worth every drop.

I've told the story before but it bears repeating.  I bought a new Denon DL-160 that had been re-tipped by Mr. van den Hul.  I absent-mindedly was using the Stylast from the very start when I first put it on the end of the tonearm. Although I was fairly pleased with the sound of the Denon - it didn't live up to standards after 50 hours when break-in is ALWAYS complete on any styli. I always find break in sufficient by 25 hours - and I personally think it's nearly or wholly entirely mechanical with a cartridge.

Somewhere the light bulb went off in my head and I realized I was using Stylast on it and cold turkey stopped.  So, by adding the wear reducing liquid, the stylus probably only had the equivalent of 5-10 hours on it.  Applying no Stylast, gradually over the next 20 hours the cartridge bloomed into one of my faves is it today - not something I normally say about moving coils; but the Denon's sound decidedly different, and better, to me.

So, the Stylast seems to do exactly what LAST claims it does - retard wear.  Unfortunately, I know of no quick and dirty amateur way of assessing whether the LAST Record Preservative works....but, I use that, as well, for the last 25 years in the hopes it does what it claims, too.

Of course, I NOW use Stylast all the time on the DL-160vdH to keep it playing sweetly for the next couple decades  :banana piano:    John

It was a tough decision to let it go.
It was a bit of a coincidence that I was offered the DL-S1 for a very fair price at the same time my mate asked if I had a TT.
The funds came in handy and went to a good cause  :D

Hey John!
Shhhh ! Keep it quiet - You're gonna blow my plan to run two decks

I can hear my good lady now;

"You mean if you buy that tiny bottle, I can get rid of that big box?"  :icon_twisted:

Yeah! I know you're a big stylast fan, I just remain a little sceptical, especially if you only play clean, good discs.
Brushing the stylus every couple of albums makes me rather twitchy.
I'd rather leave well alone.

Just checked - 30 notes to the door over here.
I'll think it over.

Cheers,
Dave
