Recommendation for travel-size speakers for laptop
« on: 16 Jun 2011, 04:29 pm »
I've been doing a lot of business trips lately and I need a good pair of speakers to use with my laptop while staying in the hotel room. Does anyone have a good recommendation for one? Prefer small, compact travel size speakers with good sound quality that plug directly into laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I travel a lot on buisness too and this is what I use. http://www.musicdirect.com/p-1265-soundmatters-foxl-v2-speaker.aspx

Decent sound for their size, much, much better than the laptop speakers. They easily fit in my suitcase (which I always carry on), usually in spaces between clothes. I use them with both my iPod and laptop.

Thanks so much for the recommendation but $170 is a bit high for my budget. I like to spend less than $50 if possible.

I've used a pair of the small logitech usb-powered speakers. I think it was the V20? USB-powered is nice - no carrying an extra power supply. Not hifi and go easy on anything with bass but were definitely an improvement over the internal speakers, and they are reasonably small and light and come with a travel case.

here is the V20 and below it is an even cheaper model..I used a logitech 5.1 surround setup that was mostly computer friendly as a home theater in several places during the year I was actually homeless for awhile..logitech makes good stuff, I found the 5.1 setup very well made for the price.........

I've used them...despite their size the sound is terrific.

I was looking for exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago before a trip.
At Best Buy I got a pair of Insignia nxt speakers for $20. They are flat and even have magnets so that they stick together when packed up. Phone jack plugs into the jack on the laptop and USB for power. Best thing (besides the price) is that they really do sound pretty good. Much better than comparable cheap computer speakers and take up a heck of a lot less room.

I received the Logitech V20 from an online store couple days ago. Plugged it into my Dell laptop with Windows XP SP3 and no sound. Took it to work today and tried on couple more Dell laptop (XP & Vista) and still no sound.
After further research on Logitech forum with people having the same problem,  this is a hit-missed product from Logitech.

That sucks. You'll need to grab a different model.

Usually they have a good track record, its surprises me its DOA-will you get refund or replacement through the online vendor?

I'm going to return them to the vendor but I have to pay the return shipping.  The "No sound" syndrome seem like a common problem for this model.

I thought about taking up your suggestion but instead I went with the Logitech. Talk about bad luck... :icon_lol:

No sweat, JohnR. I got a defective one so it's no big deal.

I bought a previous girlfriend a little Orbit speaker by Altec Lansing.

It is so simple, less than half the size of a coffee cup & just 1 wire - usb connection.

http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=altec+speakers+for+computer&tag=googhydr-20&index=electronics&hvadid=6174302237&ref=pd_sl_8f96awvjk0_b

Pretty sure its the Orbit IM227 model, though i paid 2x that amount at Best Buy.

Its not uber hi end or anything, but ultra portable & sounds good.

If you had a little amp, the Dayton B652 speakers at $29 is getting the raves.
