I've been looking but not seen any.
Copying directly over the network to the drive from my PC would be a damn sight faster than going via the BDP-1

Terry, I was looking at these the other day, the 2Tb version is only about £190 (GBP) from Amazon UK, looks good.

Thanks, it's a new item so that's why I've never seen it before.
I already have a Lacie RAID box, but it is so noisy!!!!
How quiet is this unit? Mine is a few years old now - its the 2-Big

The manual for the unit you mention states:

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you connect your Network Space MAX
to the network via Ethernet and to a computer via USB, note that
USBShare will mount on the computer as a physical drive and will
not appear on the network.


So if you want to copy stuff to it over the network and access it from the BDP-1
only one connection can be used at a time and the other cable disconnected

Thinking about it, its not too bad after all.
Leave the usb & network connectors attached all the time.
Switch on the BDP-1 and USB is active.
Switch off the BDP-1 and the network is active.
I'm liking it!
Only unknown is the noise!

just for experiment's sake got my hands on a LaCie rikiki go.....500 gig . any comments on that one? has a nice alu look to it.

ah well, problem 1: formatting choice, please help.

hooking up the LAcie HDD I get the choice to format in MAc HFS+ or in two sections with a Lacie section for the MAc (min 480gB) and a Exchange section in fat32 (that;s the one I believe?) with a partition of max 32gB. Seems useless this way having a 500 GB disk with a max 32 Gb size exchange partition....
format it under Windows maybe?

other choice I have is to close this partition assistant a go with the Apple disk utility. (never used that before, so wouldn't know the advantages of that)

FAT32 is the only r/w option at the moment but 32GBytes is pretty useless long term.
Can't you borrow a PC from someone and use the Hewlett Packard (HP) utility mentioned elsewhere to format it to FAT32 and accessing the whole disk?

Do not use anything MAC - the next software will offer HFS Plus but currently I am recommending Fat 32 or NTSF. Fat 32 let's you copy files over the network to the attached drive.

Yes use the Fat 32 utility on a windows 7 PC and I have formatted Fat32 up to 1.5TB

I have done 1Tb drives with FAT32, working fine on the BDP.

Hi James,

the thought of having a lot of 500 gig drives around doesn't appeal very much I must say. With several thousand cd's being replaced by the same amount of hirez recordings in the near future I believe 500gig usb drives are not really an option. Plus deciding in what way you'd have to select and organize the recordings on the USB drives is contrary to the way people like to listen to music I believe. A 500gig usbdrive would be handy for lets say a complete Wagner Ring recording or two, or maybe selections based on style, but they'd be no replacement for the real browsing thing. the "in the mood-recordings" would always be just on the other USB-drive lying around elsewhere (and where would that be at that moment....)

Apparently there are NAs drives that can be seen as USB drives in the way Bryston uses them, but with a much larger capacity than the 500 gigs u talk about. Wouldn't that be the best of three worlds: a large storage capacity for your/my complete recording-collection, available to connect, browse, rip and store to/from anywhere in the network and no streaming issues Bryston is wary about thus guaranteeing the pristine sound and technical quality we all strive for in this forum

We will look at that but the BDP-1 is already a NAS and the docking station could take up to four 2.5 inch 2TB drives for a total of 8TB.  I agree I prefer the direct connection approach.

This did the trick on the Mac though: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=375750 no hassle, thought it might be of interest to all other Mac-users, and for James to let them know when applicable....

How come after years of finetuning and struggling with Windows, being used to Mac's userfriendly interface and faultless operating systems after that, I get the feeling of MS-Dos techniques again getting ready for, and using the penultimate Bryston gear....
