Yes, it was very good. Solid film. They screwed up the marketing. It's a much more interesting film than the trailers conveyed. Very similar themes and pacing as the first X-MEN. Fassbender (Magneto) and McAvoy (Professor X/Charles) own the film. McAvoy in particular has continued to surprise me with his abilities since The Last King of Scotland. Not to stereotype but Fassbender's German-Irish heritage shows in his alternately vulnerable, lyrical moments and the stone cold focused bad@ss ones.
The rest of the cast is not as strong but they aquit themselves well. Big thumbs down on the black kid storyline, though. I thought we got done with that crap in the 90's. Don't want to give anything away but it was lame (think whatever happens to an Ensign on Star Trek). There is a cameo halfway through that is pretty chuckalicious and much respect to Vaughn for casting old school 'B' movie bad guys like Remar and Ironside(!).
Kevin Bacon was terrific. Really terrific. He's an actor whose real life mythology (Six degrees, etc) eclipses the fact that he is really talented.
It's not a 'blow you away' type of film. I'd even call it understated until the last half hour, but it's solid filmmaking. It puts the story first and that's a good thing.
