Anybody seen this?  Javier Bardem got a best actor nomination for it.  It was directed by the chap who I believe directed Babel and it's a character study I suppose you could call it.  I rented it so here's my take.  It takes place in working class Barcelona and Bardem plays a sort of manager of illegals who both manufacture and sell outside of the law, and who provide labor for shady contractors.  They are very human to him.  He has two kids and an ex-wife who he cares about but who struggles with manic depression.  He finds out he is terminally ill early in the picture.  Yep, it's sad and made more so by the fact that he is a dignified man trying to make things right for those in his charge and he is challenged.  I like this actor and I like this director and I liked this movie a lot.  Very different from what we see coming out of Hollywood.  In Spanish with subtitles.

Bardem is becoming one of my favorite actors...looking forward to seeing this one

Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu is the director and he is from Mexico.  Yes, he did make Babel and, also, Amores Perros and 21 Grams.  I'm glad there is an interest in this movie.  It is told with great poignancy in spite of the settings and conditions which are a little disturbing.  The cast is terrific.  I think you will like both Bardem's character and performance.  And the director.  I'd bet on it.

Wasn't really a fan of 21 Grams or Babel, but this one sounds very promising from all that I have heard.  Might have to wait for the video though.

Wind, I saw it on video.  Red Box, yet.  This is unlike those films you mention which I have seen, too.  Couldn't tell it was the same director without looking.

If you like sad and depressing, Love Liza is a great choice. One of films that helped me to come to the realization that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is my favorite actor (and one of the best character actors of his generation).

Saw it a while back.  Best I can recall was that it was positive, didn't get blown away kind of take.  Bardem is getting very hot.
