Original Ladykillers:
Peter Sellers' first role, 1955. Alec Guiness. I guess loosely redone with Tom Hanks. Original is a scream, even my 14 year old daughter found it funny today (luckily it's in color!).

Highly recommended.

But getting back to the topic question:
I don't think he was underrated. I think he was appreciated as the comic genius he was even during his lifetime, no?

Chauncey the Gardner! Yes. Just incredible.

His role in Lolita (Kubrik's black and white version) was just incredible. Such acting has rarely been duplicated by an American actor since.

No wonder Kubrik went on to use Sellers again in Doctor Strangelove--another classic role. The guy was a genius through and through.

I was wrong about the first role in Ladykillers, he had a few movies before that. I thought Bill was wrong about Strangelove coming after Lolita, but he's right: Lolita 1962, Strangelove 1963.

Lolita too controversial for America, shot in Britain instead. Worth it just for the opening sequence, which is actually the end of the novel. The book is incredible, Nabokov wrote the book AND the screenplay.

Nabokov is one of my favorite writers, if not my favorite. I am slowly reading Pale Fire now when I have time--which is usually on the subway.  :?  I have to mark off all the words I don't know so I can come home and look them up on dictionary.com

I loved Invitation to a Beheading, one of my favorites.  I have Look at the Harlequins sitting by my PC right now.  For my money Nabokov was one of the greatest pure writers in history.  His style of prose is just, well, joyous for lack of a better word.
