Anybody heard (of) a Dynaco CDV-PRO cdp?
« on: 29 May 2011, 04:49 pm »
What little research I can find suggests this tube CD player of 10 years ago might be a sleeper.  Anybody know anything about it?  My aged Rotel 955 cdp is sounds good, but I'd like to find something inexpensive that sounds more analog.  Arcam CD-72 is an option, too.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

I've read the same - but hadn't heard that Dynaco unit you mention. The Dynaco PAS-4, made by the same post-original Dynaco group that made the CDV-Pro, was a heckuva' preamp in many ways for very small $$.

I had the Rotel 965BX player for many years.  I really think the current crop of even sanely priced DVD players smokes the CD players from 10 years ago, tho.

Feed whatever digital player you have with an isolation transformer before it (it need not be big or expensive) and it'll act as a wastegate for digi garbage leaking back into the rest of your system to improve everything after it.

Tho a nice tube output probably smooths out some of the remaining discontinuous sound that spewing back 0 and 1's have endemically.

I like damping discs, too...the Herbie's stuff seems to work well consistently :thumb:

Then, when you've managed to bring your digital front end up to surprising good for remarkably little money...go invest in a vinyl front end for the times you want to hear scintillating, soul-moving music again  :guitar:

Well, first of all, since I FINALLY got my TT back up and running, I haven't even thought of pulling CDs out of the pile.  Got vinyl?  You bet!!!   :thumb:  Even my lovely spouse, for whom WAF is important and who was trying to get me to dump all my vinyl, now loves LPs.

I have a bunch of CD players including a low-end Oppo CD/SACD/DVD, a newer Marantz DV-7001 CD/DVD/SACD, and who knows how many others sitting in the basement.  For some reason the Rotel 955ax is just a little easier to listen to, but I can't pout my finger on why.

I travel a lot and I know where the Dynaco is, but I wonder what else I can find used in the $200-350 range that would begin to be a little more listenable.  Mostly classical, classic rock, sound tracks.  I listen on Maggie 1.6s in a big room.

MassWineGuy has an Arcam 72.  Anybody have experience or comparisons with that one?

I think Scott F has experience with that player. You might want to shoot him a PM.
