Get Together June 4th
« on: 29 May 2011, 01:04 am »
Sorry for the short notice, but I'm hosting a little GTG next Saturday the 4th.  Hours will be 1PM - 5PM.  Steve Sammet from SAS Audio Labs will be attending for some of the time (I have his B11A preamp).

Please drop me a PM if you can make it so I can provide details.

Thanks,

Bob

I keep forgetting to ask the wife but please pencil me in for now.  Looking forward to drooling over the Soundscape's and hearing everything.    :thumb:

Put me down as a doubtful but maybe.  Wife has been travelling a lot and the only day she's home for a couple weeks.

I asked Bob if I could bring a pair of my Cirrus by to compare a different implementation of the RAAL, in a smaller form factor ... he said sure.  So I'll be there and we can swap whenever people want.  His Soundscapes are the star of the show though.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it. We're laying and grouting tile all weekend.

A big thanks to all the Gassers that trekked over today; Steve, Lin, Bernie, Mark, Ken, Kent, Dave, Chris, Leo, Pete, and Ryan.  I think I got everyone....

It was great spending time with you.  Turns out the dropouts with the MSB were due to a sub-par USB cable.

I want to thank Bob very much for being such a gracious host to us. A real pleasure to meet you Bob. It was also a real pleasure to meet all the nice folks who attended, and the system was really good. I especially liked the drums from Salk demo CD, and Peter Frampton's little piece. Nice dynamics, accurate timbre, soundstaging etc. The songs were layered very nicely.

Ryan from Vapor Audio setup his "Cirrus" speakers and after the speaker connections "broke in" and I readjusted the impedance matching "bass" control on the 11A, his speakers were also very nice, crisp, detailed and soundstage was impressive as well. Nice job Ryan.

Much thanks to Bob again for hosting and for Ryan bringing his "Cirrus" speakers.

Yes, Linny met me in Springfield and rode down with me.

Cheers.

Thanks for hosting a get together Bob.  :thumb:

First off, it was treat to see a pair of hi gloss Salk speakers in person- absolutely beautiful, they didn't disappoint.
The big Soundscape's could really pump it out- & , really cleanly I might add.  I don't know what the dimensions of your room are but remember walking in thinking it was a tad small for such a big speaker.  More narrow at the front but midway thru the room it opens up at least another 3' wider.  After I acclimated I was so surprised just how well the Soundscapes performed on bass.  They have the ability to go plenty deep but I couldn't believe they were not overripe in your room.   That's quite a testament to Jim, Dennis and Jeff B. for applying a great technique- I had to read about it today am pulling this from Jim's site:

Quote
We discussed the situation with our friend Jeff Bagby and he designed a woofer section utilizing dual, horizontally-opposed passive drivers (read about it here). This was the perfect solution - extremely extended response with absolutely no port noise.  And since the passives were side-firing and on opposing sides, their motion canceled out any vibrations.  What’s more, they perform well closer to the wall than typical rear-ported speakers.

Also, I want to mention Ryan's effort as his Cirrus speakers offered a different take on implementing a RAAL tweeter.  They were quite nice too and I think a good number of us were impressed when we played a drum song from Jim's demo cd.  Man, I would love to have a copy of that one but would insist on being in control of the volume if anyone was over.
