The Vortexbox appliance is dropping in price so fast that I really need to consider the all in one solution to streamline my stuff. :rotflmao:
Do these units rip accurately?? or is it hit or miss? toss Up?? what?
A 3TB appliance is now $599, 3TB is alota and probably way more than I'll ever need but if I rip all my CD's and DVD's I want to make sure that it works so I don't have to make a list of rips that are bad and redo a boatload...so whats the skinny on these guys??

I can't say that I've ever run across a bad rip, but I haven't used my immensely.

Yep.

I built one for a friend this weekend, took about an hour, cost < $300 with all new parts.

How do you define "accurate"?

An exact copy of the original source.  The ripper used by Vortexbox creates a bit-perfect copy on the way to making a copy in FLAC format.

The only way I would feel comfortable that the rip is "accurate" is if it was compared to other rips...a la AccurateRip.

Do you really think the chances of errors is that high?  I've moved bazillions of files across all sorts of media and never had a problem that wasn't immediately obvious.

I'm sure the chances are somewhat greater than zero, but are they worth fussing over?

Yes.  Reading music CDs is much different than data discs.  Look it up.

I just want to make sure that I don't rip like 100 disks and find out afterward that more than 1-2% need to be redone for whatever reason. I used to rip with itunes and found alot needed to be redone then changed to Media Monkey and it got better then I changed to iriver and have had a perfect run so far so maybe its not really a concern but I just wanted to hear if anyone had any horror stories. And I'm talking about the VB appliance that "Small Green Computer" sells, the only official Vortexbox appliance that I know of not people's builds of V Boxes but of the appliance.

I'm happy when folks buy those boxes, because they help support Andrew, the guy who is Vortexbox.  Realize, though, that he simply buys the same boxes we all can buy, stuffs them with RAM, a DVD drive, and a hard disk, then installs the Vortexbox software, which is a Linux operating system with additional packages that he assembled to make it function as a convenient music server.

That's not to belittle what he's doing in any way, it surely is worth the little bit of money he asks for his efforts.  I'm just pointing out that so far as the what's being sold, you could build the identical thing if you wanted to.

I like building stuff, so that's the route I went, and to support the work, I made a direct contribution.

Big fan of the VB appliance but I still rip on my PC using dbpoweramp and then move the files over. Gotta have my AccurateRip (3171 albums with 39224 songs by 1549 artists) much better and easier control over the ripper.

Steidl thanks for letting me know that, he is a super nice guy to deal with-I have been asking questions of him lately but did not know he was the guy behind it. Now I'm in 100% :thumb: :thumb:
