That all said I get SOOOOOOO much more satisfaction out of things when I build them.  Plus I like using tools and shit.  I will still build stuff just maybe not as much.  I guess I had a really lucky stretch where everything worked pretty well.

I think I am going to sell everything and by a Wave Radio plus lots of beer...
 :banghead:

Wave Radio? Nonononono. That's like switching to methodone.

You need to keep it real.

Walk away, go do something else and come back much later.   i find it helps if you don't get ahead of yourself and do one thing at a time (which i don't follow myself).

I think what I need is a cheapish well defined speaker project.  I need to get away from single drivers.  I just can't get the output I need to get down.  I have all this BB ply in my garage calling my name.
Like a crackhead if the last fix don't work keep going.  I'm sure the next will.... :duh:

Me too, but now I'm about 80/20 buy vs build. I go in cycles. Despite my best efforts, some of the stuff I build sounds nasty and/or doesn't look the way I want, so I move on. My FirstWatt clone amps have left the nest for good, but I still have a Pumpkin and Aikido on the shelf, a couple of Aleph J-X's half built if I get the urge. I couldn't get that darn Pumpkin to stop drifting to save my life. My Atma-Sphere stuff is firmly in place right now though so I'm covered.

I have about 5 projects in the mill at the moment (besides my home maintenance/improvements) and my go to preamp back at the maker getting a transplant, but worst case I can still play tunes and enjoy them if I choose to. This is when I just stream Pandora and don't sit down much for that critical listening thing. I am quite happy with it most of the time.

Maybe you should try an open baffle project, rather easy to do. A DCX helps there.

Walking away to listen to live music is a very good plan too.

I don't remember - have you tried Minidsp? Then you get your cake and eat it too with whatever full range and your choice
of woofers. Plus you can just switch out either driver at your leisure when you want try something different.

my problems WERE the DCX. I bought one, returned it to seller. Bought a 2nd one, seemed fine, but couldn't hear the bass issue since it was just used on tops, at the time, now its back in the box...

I still have unfinished ob subs because i have no workspace.

I still have a crapload of tubes and insulation for absorber testing... the good news? It is in my sister's basement, instead of my own!

I agree.  I have a DCX now.  The mini is gone.

Hmmm, I never had a bass issue on 3 DCX's.

My OB subs have been done for awhile but I'm going to try some different subs, learning to measure better, etc. It must be about the journey, not the destination for me :duh:

I hear you though on pulling your hair out with project problems. I distinctly remember wanting to just give up and sell all my parts to try to make some money back on my SSE when I was wiring and massively confused. Also when things don't work and you can't figure out why it is heartbreaking. I was able to work through it, though I sometimes think I was permanently scarred by the mental trauma.  :duh:

Ugh -- he'd have to convert everything to cassette! In real-time.  :duh:

It's been awhile, but choices would need to be made: normal/CrO2/metal, 60 or 90 minute, TDK/Maxell/??, Dolby B/C/dbx tape/disc.

At least Nakamichi and professional decks are on a-gon all the time.

Of course I'm joking here...

Whatever you find your answer to be, know you are not alone in your frustration.

I wanted to take the guts out of an old amp I have and stuff them in the case I had built for my F5 when it didn't work right the first couple tries.

The bass cabinets I built last year were lamp stands up 'til 2 weeks ago when, after 6 different iterations of passive and active crossovers, I finally found something close enough to sounding good.

Snapped out of the funk, though, and have more directions to go in now. I'm sure I'll have a similar thread started in a couple months from now....

I will be seeing Primus at Bonnaroo this year.  Uncle Les will help me vent I am sure...
Primus is one of the featured groups and a highlight(!) for me on the 2004 Bonneroo DVD I purchased, you lucky dog.

I agree with the others Kris, just step back for a while and if it's meant to be you will be pulled in. I had one of those moments this past weekend, spent like 6 hours reworking my preamp with what I thought was going to be a improvement in the power supply. Fired it up and presto, 6dB more noise than before, not that it was noisy (95dB s/n). Like Tom I think my bent for DIY is about the journey and hobby aspect of building stuff.

I've a box of stuff that is awaiting building and I just bought an Aikido board from this Kris dude that I don't even need but can't pass up a bargain.  I'm actually thinking of building it into a preamp and gifting it to a friend along with an amp and birthing a new audiophile.  :icon_twisted:

Wanting to build something yourself that can do higher volumes? Check out the Audio Nirvana dirvers. Loved my 12" drivers from them.

Thanks guys!  I feel a bit better.  One of the tapped horns is fine so thats good.  The other is going to need surgury.  I did not touch anything all weekend so thats good.  The problem is I am dying to build something out of all the nice ply I have!
