x-ls, x-cs, encore versions - questions
« on: 26 May 2011, 12:03 am »
a couple questions on the x-ls/x-cs speakers (I did a quick search, but my questions didn't appear to be answered - sorry if this has all been covered).

1. any reason not to use the x-cs as an LCR, or even just LR for a two channel set up?
2. what is the encore upgrade? just the tweeter?

thanks much

The X-CS' actually make excellent stereo monitors.  I picked up a pair of classics a while back and converted them to Encore which was a major upgrade in itself.  The classic tweeters were terribly muffled and dark sounding.  They just couldn't compete with the Encore tweeters.  Because they are different tweeters the crossovers are slightly different too.  I swapped the caps for Sonicaps and resistors for Mills.  I also scraped out the stuffing on mine and added No Rez as well as a bit of poly-fill.

I shot a video of them being driven by a modified Dynaco ST70 (35w/ch) and Bottlehead Quickie Preamp with my old Rega Planet as source.

They rocked even harder when I threw 200 solid state watts at them.

So yeah, they are a steal!

No problem.

The Encore version has a better tweeter and uses a different crossover. They can be further upgraded with Sonicaps, better wire, and lining them with No Rez. Taking them to that extreme results in a real world class speaker.
