Input needed on vintage mono's
« on: 25 May 2011, 12:07 am »
I'm thinking of picking a rebuilt pair of Eico HF-20's.  Redone, modded and nice wood bases.  Will now take 6l6's, KT88's or EL34's and variants thereof.  Comes with Raytheon 6c4, RCA cleartop 12AU7A's and RCA 5U4GB's.   I would have to buy new final tubes.  Any words of wisdom appreciated.

6c4? Interesting. I have a pair of HF-30s that have a 6c4 and a 6AV6 instead of a 7247. They made the same amp in different ways sometimes it seems.

Would you be using them as power amps or integrated(s)? What is the price?

Still haggling on price (not cheap) They have been reworked to a different circuit topology, so it no longer uses the "williamson" circuitry.  They have been done by JWN.  Strictly mono amps.

The ones on this page?

$2500 seems like rather a lot for reworked vintage amps. it's not really an HF-20, just the output transformers and metalwork. My thinking is that in that price range there are loads and loads of amps that could be considered. I'm not saying they're not worth it, but I think you'd need to be pretty confident they are "the ones." Have you heard that particular pair?

Well, I dunno. What kind of advice are you looking for? You're not saying much about why you'd even be looking at them.

I'm simply looking for people with experience with items such as these.  I've run tubes for years and I keep hearing about the great sound and quality from some of these vintage units.  I'm curious.

Well, that's not really a vintage unit. Unless you can see and hear them yourself (or are prepared to take a gamble), you'd need to find someone who's familiar with the person's work.

John's correct.  On the website, it's stated that he's using his own circuit.  If you never heard that circuit, you won't know if these Eicos will sound anything like the stock units.  I've had stock Eico HF-12 mono amps and they had the vintage "1960s" tube sound. If you like a mid-range dominated sound, then they could be your cup of tea.
