I'm a little disappointed that the BDA-1 doesn't process dts. Like I was piping the Dolby stereo track through the BDA-1 with Heart- Alive in Seattle. Switching over to dts, the sound quality just blows the Dolby track out of the water. It's not even a contest as to which one sounds better, it's obvious, dts.

Perhaps there is way of routing the dts digital out signal from player to receiver and have it decoded then run it through the BDA-1. But I haven't been able to figure it out?

Hi Mag,

DTS (Dolby) is a completely different kind of signal than PCM so you would have to get an SP3 for that job.

Unfortunately I think the SP3 is out of my price range. I'm hoping to snag a used SP2 for a reasonable price, but not sure that I can make it work in my unconventional setup.

We are going to continue to sell the SP2 as well as the SP3 because unless you want the new HD movie formats (HDMI)  the SP2 is still one great sounding unit

An SP2 will probably better my Yamaha but I would have to drop 2 speakers. In my unconventional setup, these 2 speakers kinda mask the localization of having multiple speakers. However the sound could be far superior to what I'm hearing that it'll offset the absence of these speakers.

How many surround speakers do you have?

I have Paradigm monitor 9 in the corners, they are the surrounds, then I have Presence speakers, B&W DM601S3, then 2 sets of fronts Paradigm Studio 100 v2 and Paradigm Studio 20 v3, 2 center channels Paradigm cc-590 v5 & Paradigm Studio cc-470 v3 which is the back channel reflecting off the front wall.

With a SP2 I would not have the Presence speakers.

The SP2 has 2 full sets of Balanced (5.1) and unbalanced (7.1) outputs which run in parallel so you can easily double up.

I want to correct what I posted earlier.

Apparently my dvd player can convert the dts or Dolby to D-pcm, however HDMI has to be changed from Auto to pcm. The dts will then play through the BDA-1 at a sound quality comparable to the dts HDMI connection. Just that the mix has the vocals prominent drowning out the instruments.

Using just the AV/receiver for processing, only the HDMI cable need be connected, with output set to dts and HDMI auto. In multi-channel 5.0 mix the soundstage is evenly balanced between vocals and instruments, much more pleasing to listen to IMO.
