Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides

I saw the latest Pirates Movie in Charleston yesterday at an IMax Theater in 3D.  The movie was entertaining but I thought the story was too slow developing.  My wife and son told me they thought the movie was "just okay" as we were leaving the theater.  My rating 3 out of 5 stars.

What did you think of the 3D?

We (my wife, son and I) felt the 3D added very little to this movie.  However, the IMax Sound System was totally awesome!

The movie itself was just another pirate movie with Johnny Depp playing as Captain Jack!  Penelope Cruz was beautiful (how can she not be) and a different character - Captain Blackbeard's daughter.  There was plenty of the action we have become accustomed to in the pirate movies.  For me it just took too long to develop the story and the movie seemed to drag.  I was definitely ready for it to end.

I read in the USA Today last night that the movie grossed 90 million over the opening weekend.  It was 30 million less than the last pirate movie.  The article sited that early reviews on Rotten Tomato were that 39% of viewers liked the movie and that had reduced attendance.

Anyway, as I stated earlier it is an entertaining movie, maybe fun if you liked the other pirate films but for me it I cannot give it a must see rating.  I will stick by my 3 out of 5 rating.

We took our family to see the movie on Sunday afternoon.  The 3D was fairly subtle and was not used as a gimmick in the movie.  Compared to the first three movies, this one has the weakest story line.   There are not as many weird happenings and beings in this movie.  The "zombiefied" crew leaders of Blackbeard's ship and the mermaids were the exceptions.  Penelope Cruz added eye candy to the Pirates franchise, and from the trailer after the credits, she will be back for number five.  Blackbeard in real life was probably a lot more menacing than the movie character.  I concur with the 3 out of 5 star rating.

Took the wife to see it yesterday, and in spite of the outrageously loud soundtrack, occasionally dozed off.  However, what I saw of it was mostly entertaining.  Definitely made for fans.

Saw it last week. As always Johnny Depp was charismatic and funny. We thought it was 2nd best to the 1st (Black Pearl). Penelope was awelcome addition and change. Syrena's (the mermaid) male lover was lame imho. She was appropriate for her role, but she is also a famous French model. 4/5 stars.

This is obviously biased, but I am a big Depp fan, and a big fan of the Pirates Soundtrack. Modern contemporary music.

Anand.

It doesn't have intense action scenes, for me it was an ok movie.

I saw it recently and enjoyed way more than I expected to. Funny enough I really do not care for the first 2 films so much, and thought the third was okay but I am a sucker for pirate movies and the production design and effects on these films are top notch. What I disliked most about the first 3 was amount of screen time that got spent covering too many weak characters and plots. Stranger Tides drops the dead weight of Keira and Orlando and allows the focus of the film to fall on the characters that everyone like best, Depp and Barbossa (too bad Davy Jones couldn't be in this one). I have to give credit to Depp for stepping up the plate and not allowing a weak moment performance-wise throughout the film. And I have to give credit to the screenwriters for doing a very brave thing: they refused to give Jack Sparrow an opportunity to 'change'. The ending choice he makes w/ Cruz on the island was terrific. This almost never happens. A movie like this by any other studio would have made Sparrow fall in love w/ Cruz and ended with him surrounded by little Sparrows. But amazingly Stranger Tides recognized that the core of Sparrow is he is a constant, a trickster, and as such never changes but impacts other characters (the fountain cup swap for instance). Anyhoos I could go on, but it's very rare that the main character is a trickster that never changes, so kudos to them. I think that's why I liked this one the most.

Also the twist with the Spain's reasons for finding the fountain was neat and pretty funny. Nice shout out to the catholics.

No this one works independent of the others, it's a completely separate storyline but If you think the previous were boring, then you should definitely pass...
