My long time girlfriend actually complained about a tuner (Rotel) I bought a year ago, because it sounds like crap (compared to my old Marantz tuner), and demanded I spend a little more money on quality next time...
I guess I am one of the lucky ones!

"Can an audiophile be happily married ?"

well, imo, there's at least as good a chance as w/anyone else.  more than half the marriages in the usa now end in diworce, and i am sure the diworces aren't all audiophiles!

as has been mentioned here awreddy, honesty & trust and being fair is what's important, regardless of what your interests are...

what's really funny about prelude's post is, from the emotional reaction and fallout, it's exactly as if the wife found out about a mistress his buddy had!    :green:

Audio is a mistress

Reminds me of rather funny story I read years ago about a guy who got hooked on ebay. His obsession ended when he returned home from work one day and his wife met him at the door with his latest package. "Two things," she said. "First, your $800 medieval sword just arrived. Second, we need to talk..."

I once emailed a girl and offered to leave my wife if she would marry me. She had a 4b and altec a7s in her bedroom system. Girl of my dreams sight unseen. She never got back to me. I suspect she had many similar offers.

Not quite 36 years but today my wife and I are celebrating 8 years and luckily for me she is a total audiophile.

When we went to a PMC/Bryston open day last year and she was so blown away by the active PMC BB5 XBD's she was very keen to upgrade our 4B SST2/EB1i combo to 7B SST2/MB2i's, obviously I was happy to oblige  :)

That's pretty damn cool.

My wife is probably more of a audiophile than I am.  While I can get caught up in the technical aspects of this hobby, she just enjoys sitting back and listening to her favorite tunes.  She goes with me to several audio gatherings, most recently Axpona.  However, while I'm drooling over various equipment, she just wants to hear it.  Once she does, she either likes it, or does not.  I've gotten her to the point where she can now tell me why she does and does not like something.    We make time every week to sit for an hour or two and just listen to music.  It's nice having a hobby that the two of us can enjoy together.

All of this just to say that she doesn't really have a problem with my expenditures, as she knows I'll never spend more than we need to or can afford.

So is this.

Whipped!!!

Being "Whipped" is far better than living in my parents' basement at 44.  Some things are far more important than a stereo.

Hey, Werd needs all that free time for cooking Top Ramen Noodles and hunting for sexy librarians. A wife would only tether him down!

This is more his game baby.  8)

Oddly enough, many years ago I was engaged to a hot librarian.  Didn't work out, the little b****!

My first wife enjoyed music and the stereo along with me. It did not help the marriage.
Current wife enjoys music but not the same music I enjoy. Also, she couldn't care less about the equipment. We've been happily married for 25 years.
We also have separate accounts for discretionary spending. It makes for fewer arguments as she has no idea what I spend on this hobby.
One more thing, my wife makes more money than I do. :thumb:

"Audio is a mistress".  That's quite a quote.  Gonna remember that one.

I'll give you that.  Haven't "lived in my parents' basement" since the summer after I graduated from college.  Those 3 months were the longest 3 months of my life.

There are far more advantages to being happily married.  While playing Dungeons & Dragons or Magic: The Gathering with a killer system bumping in mom and dad's basement may seem like a good time, it's quite pathetic.  People who say they're like that by choice aren't fooling anyone.

Some of these posts are taking a personal tack which perhaps shouldn't be pursued further in the interests of civility.
