When I rip CD's with Windows Media Player, it downloads the album name, cover and the title of the songs.

When I started using Monkeymedia yesterday for the first time, it didn't do any of the above. Is that what tagging software is supposed to do? I've started trying reading the instructions but it's all rather confusing. Or do I just hand type all the artist, album and song information? Or should I keep re-reading all that to be able to "get it"?

Might it be that you are ripping to WAV?
As there is no tagging standard, portability of the tags from one media player to the other is very poor.
If you rip to WMAL or MP3 you probably won’t have this problem.

It's been a while since I used mediamonkey (had a bad experience with it) but I thought it tagged as well-maybe you hd something set up wrong?

Anyway my favorite tagging software is MP3TAG (works on FLAC files as well).  Is freeware, quite handy and easy to figure out.  It usually can figure out the info from online databases-sometimes you may have to correct typos or change data the way you want it (for example, what category the music fits into-I often disagree).

Nope. FLAC.

I went to the exactaudiocopy site and downloaded the Foxtab software which was on their site which didn't read the CD in my cd drive. But I realize that I can actually download EAC - a little lower on the site.

Eh - exactcopy won't download the CD either. Never thought it would be this difficult.

Make sure you have the ripper set to write metadata into the track. EAC used to a have a check box for this, which was set to no as default on one version I used, cost me a lot of time to fix. I never used Media Monkey, but they all have a way to defeat tags if you want that. I use mp3tag to edit flac tags.

I also can edit tags right inside windows explorer by right clicking on the song and hitting edit, but I don't know if that is a windows feature or that of music software I have installed, like mp3tag or dbpoweramp.
