Mr'Liang Mr'Leung amps?
« on: 12 May 2011, 03:49 pm »
Anyone know anything about Mr'Liang amps?  I read a smattering of postings but not much beyond that.  Seem to need some upgrades to really soar.

Curious if anyone know all the model they manufacture?  And if dollar for dollar, they are a good value compared to the likes of MingDa, Yaqin, Jolida etc...

Thanks,
UL

I have one of the 845 SET integrated, it seems quite well made. I made only a minor change as suggested in one of the diy audio threads about the cathode resistor in the input tube. This drastically reduced the distortion and raised the output power as the input tube was starved for current. That said, I have never used it. I purchased it from a friend who needed more power with the idea that someday I would implement the Tubelab powerdrive circuit and it's been sitting ever since. I look at it when I go downstairs thinking I either need to do something with it or sell it since it's been collecting dust for over a year.

My favorite Chinese amp is the Ming-Da 805SET (model MC30082A) at PacificValve site, http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/tubes-valves/154038-ming-da-mc-3008-a2-mono-blocks.html
As it delivery real 40W the output tube do not last much, If you had a stock of 300B/805 tubes it is great amp, but if you reduce the output power to 20-25W the 805 tube will last much more.

At Lampizator site there is a two MingDa test: http://www.lampizator.eu/AMPLIFIERS/CHINA/Mingdamc300-C/ming-da.html

And a very ilustrated Mr.Liang 845 amp test: http://lampizator.eu/AMPLIFIERS/CHINA/MrLiung.html
Good Luck, Gustavo

Hey!

I've never heard those amps mentioned here.

But I see that eBay is flooded with Chinese tube amps. I have to say that the pictures of the built inside and out are impressive. Parts quality seems very good also. But worry me most is the quality of the output transformer.

When is come to tube amp especially SET, good output transformer is crucial. In the world today where copper price is through the roof. I hope they didn't cheap out there. Other wise it will like a singer with pretty face with horrible voice :icon_lol:

Anyway, the price is sure tempting though. Would love to hear them and see  :D

Take care,

One thing I have learned about quality of almost anything, there is no such a thing as free lunch, which means that most of the time, you do get what you paid for....but sometimes, you can also get a LOT more than you bargained for especially when it comes to equipment.  For most of my experience, electronics have been mostly reliable...but then there are the stinkers, for which I paid good money for but the reliability has been questionable.  The issue with affordable amps, they sort of fall under the radar of what we call expensive, especially those Ebay tubed amps made in the far east, but then, when they do fail, there is not much incentive to get them fixed especially if the manufacturers are overseas....the shipping is prohibitive.  The dilemma falls whether it would be worthwhile to get the piece fixed domestically because of the price paid.

I feel I rather purchase a used quality product and if the necessity arises, I get it fixed here rather than gamble my money away trying to get away paying $$$$ just to get burned with unexpected repair costs.

Of course, this is just myself talking here.

By the way, AffordableAudio.com did a review of Mr Liang 85 in the August 2010 issue.
