Hooking up my 'new' SSP...
« on: 12 May 2011, 03:30 pm »
Hey all,

I just acquired an Integra 9.8 from a kind AC member... It has been years since I have dabbled in the HT side of audio (before hdmi!) and I had questions on hook up  (once I get a chance to open the box and do so).

I have a Oppo BDP 83se - Should I just go all HDMI and auto calibration set-up or is the analog in the 9.8 good enough and the Oppo's calibrations good enough to go that rout?
Im thinking just all HDMI to take advantage in the ease and functions I have never played with before...

This will be for TV, blu-ray & DVD and the occasional CD. Rarely if ever will I be listening to any other format like SACD or DVD-A in this room

I wanted to start with this simple question and use this thread for any other related issues as I go... Assuming Ill confuse myself at some point  :?

Since your OPPO is the SE version, the best "sound quality" will be from the analog outputs of the OPPO to the 5.1 or 7.1 analog inputs of the Integra.

For video the HDMI is certainly the way to go.

That said the INTEGRA is no "slouch" in the DAC department, and you may be satisfied with HDMI for audio too, but you will lose the reason you went with the OPPO SE in the first place.

Try it both ways!  Then you'll know which you prefer.

The 9.8 will have better bass management than the Oppo; that is my biggest complaint on all of the new ones all the way through the BDP-95.

There is a huge convenience with using strictly HDMI for multichannel music.

Thanks guys! Just the responses I was thinking... Was definitely wondering about the dac in the Integra. I picked up the Oppo on here too so no worries about using it's HDMI with the Integra's bass management, and will hook up analog out of the Oppo for music listening...
Actually, my Mirage OM 6's are the powered subs (and they do plenty fine in this room) so maybe I will go analog too (since the bm in the Oppo can not put the sub further away from the L &R fronts -- that will not be a issue for me). Bottom line here is I'll do both and see

I want to use the full function of the Integra and finally have no dialog delay but I also want the clearest SQ I can get.

Looking forward to set-up, tweaking and catching up on some action flix...
