Older Onkyo as CD transport
« on: 5 May 2011, 07:31 pm »
I'm thinking of selling my Arcam CD72 because I use a DAC. I may have an older Onkyo CD player in my attic. It was in good shape when it was replaced by the Arcam. Could I use the Onkyo strictly as a transport? Would it matter sonically?

Thanks.

Of course you know the answer is try it and compare the sound.

Although many will tell you a transport is a transport (0s and 1s and all that) some have more digital jitter than others at the S/PDIF output, and some DACs are better than others at rejecting the jitter or reclocking the signal.

I don't know which model you have, but usually the more expensive better built older CD players also had better behaved digital outputs.

Only one way to know for sure.
