Help with Telefunken mx5550
« on: 3 May 2011, 03:45 pm »
Hello.
I hope I'm posting in the correct circle....
I've come across a Telefunken Opus mx5550 receiver made in Germany 1964(ish). The bass adjustment knob doesn't seem to change the bass level. (no bass at all). Could this problem be caused by an issue with a tube or should I be looking for a mechanical problem? This unit is made where almost everything must be removed from the cabinet just to access the area behind the face. I'm not an electrician & don't want to do more harm than good by poking around.
Thanks for any help or advice,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Since the tubes are probably easier to get at, if you have one in stock try changing. But don't be surprised if it does not correct the situation.

The design and component parts of bass and treble tone controls in almost all circuits is nestled together in one stage. This almost certainly rules out a tube being bad as the treble control would also be ineffective.

If easy, check tubes first, but one (or more) of the parts used in the bass "circuit" is probably bad. Probably an open/increasing value resistor, leaky/shorted capacitor, or open capacitor as the culprit.

Hope this helps.
