Free vintage Magneplanar panels
« on: 2 May 2011, 07:13 pm »
I have six full size Tympani panels for anyone who wants them. They were given to me by a man who found them in the basement of his house. They have been stripped of the frames and grill cloth. I have not tested them. The wires are still glued to the mylar panels, so I suppose they can be made functional.  My intention was to make a project of them but I have since realized that this will never happen. My next bulk pickup here in U City is May 26, and if nobody has taken them they will go on the curb.

WOW!  I am SO tempted but I just sold my DQ-10s that I had been keeping "just in case".

Wylie,
Do you know what model they are? Are there ribbons on two panels?

I don't know the model, but  these are truly vintage. The adhesive holding the voice coil wires to the Mylar is yellowed.

No ribbons. I recently made a house call and replaced blown Maggie ribbons so I recognize the newer models.

Hmm...tempting, but it looks like yet another project to humble myself.  :?
Damn. Sure sounds like fun though.

IF it was not an all day drive there  (seven hours nonstop driving) , then an all night drive back, PLUS having to weedle a minivan from a friend to carry them back, then having to store then while i plan, then actually DOING something with them.. I would be there in a heartbeat!
But as it is, I am passing (SOBBING    , but passing)..
Can you say the actual size in 'wide' by' tall' times six wide?
To know if they could even FIT into a minivan?

Willie? Would you be willing to box them up and ship them. I like rebuilding those! I have a set of M1's that are spectacular. I will of course pay for boxing and shipping.

Here's a page that summarizes the various Magnapan models.

http://www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/articles/speakers.html

So these are either T-1  (also called T-1Us), T-1A, T-1B, T-1C, T-1D (which were introduced before 1980 by the way), T-IV, or T-IVA.

Or maybe T-IIIs that are missing two panels  :D

Definately fun for somebody.  I'ld grab them if I didn't already have too many projects.

Sorry, I won't pack or ship them.

On another note, I just looked at the panels and discovered that I was wrong.  Two are tweeters. The ID tag says T1. This is the most effort I have spent on these since I received them, and is the last effort I will expend on them until I either take them to a car or the curb. I am sinking in unfinished business and throwing freight overboard. I have all this new stuff I sell as a dealer and haven't even had time to try the various system setups and combinations.

I think I'll just sit here, staring at this screen telling myself, "No", until the first person stands up and says, "Yes".

Then I'll be mad at myself.

Look at it this way - these panels are a crap-shoot. Tell yourself that there is some hidden flaw that will make any effort spent just a waste of time.

Sorry to hear that. It would almost be a crime to just throw a way such wonderful sounding planar speakers. Somebody please go pick them up and fix them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :( :( :D

O.K.  Maybe you have family in the Twin Cities that you haven't visited for a long time and want to drive up for some god awful reason. Gas prices and all.  :icon_lol: :thumb: :thumb:  JK But if you have never heard planar speakers you need to go directly to the nearest super high end store and ask to listen to Magnapan or Martin Logan's and sit down in front of them for a while.  To rebuild the Timpani's should only run you around $100-150 per pair. Not bad considering new Maggies are out of my 95 Maz 626 owning butt.

Bring some blankets to separate the panels. You don't want them banging on each other.
