Suspension and motor adjustment Systemdek IIX
« on: 2 May 2011, 05:28 pm »
A friend of mine wanted to get back into listening to vinyl after he heard my setup.

So, he and I pulled his Systemdek IIX out of storage, mounted a new cartridge (Blue Point) on his Linn Basik, leveled the table on his rack, adjusted the suspension, installed a new belt and all seemed well.

The only problem is that the belt rides too high on the pulley, rubbing against the top. The rubbing seems to he causing excessive background noise.

My obvious question is, what do we need to adjust to get the belt to ride on the crown of the pulley?

Thanks all.

Is the motor and it's pulley tip at an angle towards the platter?

That's exactly what I think the issue is.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion.

The bracket must become bent downward sometime during storage.

Other than that, there doesn't seem to be any other damage to the table.

By the way, he has an 20 mm acrylic platter on the table instead of the 12 mm glass platter, but he is using the original felt mat. Would he be better served by changing to another type of mat?

Just keep in mind that the shaft of the motor and the shaft of the platter should be parallel to each other. As far as the felt mat, I'd loose it or give it to Good Will. Some one could use it as a pot holder.

If I remember correctly there's a motor adjusting screw by the motor. I am on a trip now, otherwise I'd take a look at mine. Bracket doesn't get bent by just sitting around.

There are 2 screws that mount the bracket to the plinth. There are screws that hold the motor in the bracket.

Where the bracket makes contact with the plinth there is a raised bump toward the back of the bracket, and a grommet at the front. I didn't see any other screws that look like they could be for adjustments. We even found an original setup manual online and there is no mention of a motor adjustment, although it would seem logical that there should be one.

I'm going back to my friend's house tonight to work on it more.

Unfortunately, the table wasn't just 'sitting around'. It was packed very poorly, with the platter off and the bracket exposed, with other objects that could have pressed down on the bracket over the years.

UPDATE:

I just found an illustrated instruction manual on VinylEngine (the manual we found the other night was not illustrated) that does show a motor adjustment screw. But neither manual even mentions the screw or need to adjust the tilt of the motor. I don't remember seeing the adjustment screw, but it was late at night when we set it up.

Yes, that's the one at the back of the motor. First I saw it I didn't know what it was for for sure, I found the info at vinylengine a while back as well.

Play with it and it may solve your problem.
