Please tell us what type and thickness of foam was protecting those corners and if the whole package was double boxed.

Two boxes the same, one dropped.  Thee layers of bubble wrap, plus peanuts, two layers of card board,  double boxed.  One out of two, not goog.

Wow, just bubble wrap and peanuts?! I always expect foam corners with any speakers that are shipped.

....good luck (to us all!). I was at a full fledged Fed Ex office waiting in line. the counter has two scales at the low front counter which are used during the "check in."  Someone filled those both during a large drop-off. I watch the FE employ pick up one of the boxes that looked medium weight, to move it the holding area behind her. during that 3 foot transfer, she missed the edge of that high counter and boom, package down. about 4 foot drop. Red stickers on all sides of the box with the words FRAGILE with glass icon!

As I said... good luck to us all.

The worst UPS event I personally witnessed:
I am in line at regional center: A UPS employee is pushing a  cart with a huge package on it. he gets it partway through the door. the box is clearly four inches too wide to fit. The guy decides he is going to get it through that door, no matter what. As a room full of customers watch, he proceeds to smash the parcel repeatedly against the door frame, trying to 'wedge' it through the door.
After a half dozen reaally hard tries, the owner of said parcel happens back in/ Fireworks!
The bitchin' thing is if the guy would have TURNED the parcel 90 degrees, it would have gone right through.
Moral of story. UPS guys are idiots. 100% morons.

You can see the bad news.  The good news is that they sound wonderful.

The sad thing is that they only had to travel a few hundred miles!

You  cannot use those peanuts for anything in shipping. Period.
Bubble wrap and more bubble wrap with foam if possible.
The Item has to be tight in the box with about 3" all around.

I would NEVER use UPS. NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I shipped some pretty expensive stuff last year via Fed Ex and never had a problem.
At least 25 items not all audio related.

The corner on that speaker would drive me nuts!
Very sorry to see that.

Live and learn.  As sad and preventable as it was, it's still only a speaker, it's fixable.  :)

I'm still looking forward to about a month from now when the semester is over, I get my house to myself, and I can setup my system properly.

Solid foam. i can go to a shop locally that sells foam product and has a bin of scraps I can buy for a few bucks. Solid foam. Carve it up any which way to send the items. Two or three inches of dense foam is going to stop ANY damage except the prong of a fork lift.
Drop it ten feet, no problem.
And anything you send, expect it to have a drop of at LEAST five feet on any corner. Period. If it isn't ready to take that, your package is not properly packed.
(Worst is stuff with super heavy parts inside. Like transformers They rip loose. Then you have to have just the right give in the packing material.. so the ten foot enevitable drop will STILL be safe.)
My opinion.
But  that fork lift prong... watch out. Even solid 1/2 " plywood sides are not going to save you if the forklift driver wants your package!!
I ordered a small Lil'DotIII headphone amp direct from China.
That package arrived and looked (Looked? it WAS used) like it had been used for several 'hard fought' football games.
The "customs" crazies in Alaska (great circle Hong Kong to Great lakes straight through Alaska) used it to play football for at least a few full games. I had never seen a package so beat in my LIFE.
The tubes inside where knocked loose with the pins all sideways. Amazing thing though, The Lil" DOT was not harmed. The stiff foam cradle inside the package protected my new toy.
I straightened out the pins on all the tubes and it worked.
Amazing.

Jparkhur -

I don't get over here as much as I'd like, so maybe I missed this. Are you doing cabinets for the N3?

Very sorry to see that J...I've been there before.

+1

I let one of the employees at our main UPS hub pack up a pair of N3's that were going to be used by Danny at last years Lone Star Audio Fest. Both enclosures arrived damaged.:duh: That was the first and last time (thus far) that I've ever had to deal with shipping damage. I pack everything myself now. Needless to say, I don't use UPS anymore (for anything).:nono: I now use either FedEx, or YRC, depending on weight.

Beautiful finish on those. They need 5 layers of bubble warp, the quarter size air bubbles on top and bottom. When I ship it is always prudent and peace of mind to spend the $15 for a roll of Bubble Wrap (at Target) if needed.

My Usher 6371's (90lbs ea., cast bases 30 lbs ea.) I have somewhat the same finish, they came from Wisconsin in perfect condition. Not, that I wasn't praying until they got here.
Original packing materials, good boxes. Never throw out your original boxes.
FED EX!!!

Here's a pair of piano N3's crated. They are packed in such a way, that, aside from a forklift mishap, they cannot be damaged. :thumb:

I still get butterflies though!
