Room mode/treatment questions
« on: 23 Apr 2011, 03:08 pm »
Maybe someone here can educate me regarding room modes and acoustic treatment placement!?!?!

I'm currently making some 2'x6' acoustic panels and need to know the best placement.

I also was wondering which numbers should I use to calculate the room modes due to my open wall to the kitchen and half sloped ceiling?

I modeled up my room and furniture/speakers yesterday on CAD...any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you measured from the listening position with either an RTA or SPL meter with a test disc?

Just outside Detroit in Canton.  I work right across the street from the Lions HQ  LOL  GO LIONS hahahah

It sounds fantastic to me but I just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of  my setup.   Last week I added internal bracing/polyfill/dynamat'd the horns on my Klipsch KLF-30's.  What has me thinking is...I thought it sounded great before then picked up a Modwright 9.0 SE tube pre-amp and realized I had no clue what I was missing.  That's why I'm exploring room treatments and placement.

No.  Is that where I should start?    Anyone in the Detroit area have one I can use?  There's an ice cold 12 pack with there name on it if so!

If you have a Radio Shack analog SPL meter, rivesaudio.com sells a $21 test disc that is meant to compensate for the shortcomings of its microphone.  There are also various sites where you can download test tones.  You probably want to treat the bad problems if there are any.  I have a 1/3 octave RTA but Detroit is a bit far otherwise I'd come over for the beer

You don't have to spend any money if you have an SPL meter.  Real Traps has it all done for you here: http://www.realtraps.com/test-cd.htm

I haven't done it as I use HolmImpulse but you can just enter the values into Excel and then plot them.  Super easy and very cost effective.

Wow! I feel like I won the lotto!!!   I Live at Beck and Geddes  in the River Meadows sub.  If it's not too much to ask, I could use all the help you're willing to offer.  I'm pretty new to the mid-fi scene and am a noob!

Let me know a good time for you and what is your drink of choice.  I'll pm you my addy and number.

Thanks again Pete for dropping off the SPL meter and taking the time to educate me.  I plan to run more sweeps tonight and look for another set of mains ;)

Pete,
I took your advise and am picking up a pair of  Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Signatures ribbon mahogany later today!!!  I guess I'll have to redo the sweeps now.
