Converting Vinyl LPs to Digital & CDs
« on: 18 Apr 2011, 08:24 pm »
I am sure this topic must have been covered here before. If so, I would appreciate being directed to a thread and/or a reliable website, as I am having some difficulty in my search. I would also love to hear directly from AC members who have actually ripped their albums to CDs and who are satisfied enough with the end product that they are using it to listen to music.

Otherwise... who's having success in converting their vinyl, LP collection to digital? What methods are available? Which approach is the simplest, as well as which approach produces the best fidelity and sound quality?

I would love to be able to make CDs from of some of my LPs, as well as expand the possibility for mixing up track lists from LPs that there are no digital sources.

Thanks and Regards.

You'll get quite a few different opinions on this one but I use an Hhb 830 BurnIt Plus with great results.
This model has been out of production for quite some time but you can get them on eBay.

Oh, I forgot to mention that my computer is a 2011 MacBook Pro, if that is important for the conversation.

I have a TASCAM CC-222SLMKII that lets me burn thru my Van Alstine's phono preamp onto a CR-RW.

After that, I bring the CD-RW into the computer and download it (converted) to a .wav file. Then I use Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 to import each track. Then, with Cakewalks tools, I can clean up the beginning of each track, do a better fade-out (if it needs it) for the end of the song. In the end, a much better product to listen to then many commercially produced CDs. I do not use any pop or click filters, either.

It's all about what process the recordist wants to go thru, this works for me.

I use a TC Impact Twin for A/D and Reaper to record/split/trim etc. It works pretty well. The TC is a firewire device, so will work with a Mac. Reaper is available for OSX as well.

Hi Bside,
My approach is very similar to Wayners.
A permanent addition to my system is a Pioneer PDR 609, digital audio recorder.
I use Audio CDRW's, record what I want and either copy to a normal CDR on the PC and/or pull off and save the WAV files using Nero.
There's plenty of clips on my Cart Review Website if you fancy hearing some examples.
Cheers

Wow, I hadn't thought about it in a long time but I have one of those, or something similar, definitely a Pioneer CDR recorder of some type. Might have to dig through the basement and give it a try. Thanks for the reminder.  :thumb:

Thanks for the responses so far!  :D

So it appears to me that I basically have two options:

1) use a separate component such as a CD recorder (for instance the one's mentioned) and then output and edit as needed with the various software applications that are available for my purposes

-OR-

2) digitize directly on to the computer by outputting from a USB TT (not my preference) or via my own TT and system preamp using the computer's audio in jack, cables that convert from 2 RCA single-ended into 1 mini and recording and editing with recording software.

Do I basically get it?

Also, are folks having real, QUALITY, audio success digitizing directly from their hi-fi (TT/preamp/amp) onto a computer (Mac or PC)? If so, which are the best recording programs for Mac? And... is the Mac ADC sufficient? And... do I need to get worked up about cables?  :duh:

When I want to make a CD from vinyl I use an Alesis Masterlink ML-9600 to make either CD24 (24/96) or Redbook CDs. http://www.alesis.com/masterlink

It does a great job.

I always used to use a Onkyo mini-disc recorder then to my computer.
Then thru the Pop "N" Click Assassin . But for me this was to time comsuming so it just kinda faded away   :)...................Bill

I have an M-Audio converter thing, I think it's actually called the Audiophile. Then I bought software, Peak. Hooked up the computer, found the areas between the songs, burned disks, etc.

This was in my iPod phase a few years back. Now I sit back and listen to the records. Too tedious.
